The Gestalt approach represents structure and assumption that a person must assume responsibility for their behaviors and actions, whereas the person-centered approach represents self-actualization while the therapist provide support and an environment conducive to change. The role of Gestalt Family therapy is to allow the each member of the family to express themselves in a positive light and accept and respect others within the family unit. Another goal of Gestalt therapy is re-establishing relationships between families allowing their voices to be heard; expressing feeling that have been suppressed or denied. In Gestalt therapy, therapist work to improve individual family member’s self-awareness, that awareness is of the impact individual members have on the family.

The both focus on the conscious mind, the here and now and focus on current problems and issues the client may have.
