When I was 10 years old, I had to go to the doctor to get my blood drawn.I was scared but I tried to act like a “big kid”, but that failed and I

When I was five years old, I began to notice that things were not quite right with my body. I was getting sick a lot, and always found myself going to the bathroom. In addition to that, and something that also supplemented the bathroom situation, was that I was always thirsty and in need of a drink. After a while my mother decided to take me to the doctor’s office, where they did some blood testing to hopefully determine what was wrong with me. The results came back, and they said that I had Type 1 Diabetes. The immediately took me to the hospital, Childrens Hospital of Pittsburgh, where I was hooked up to an IV and stayed in the emergency room for an entire week. What happened would be something that changed my life from that moment forward.…

Vaccination is very safe and effective. Vaccines are only given to children after a long and careful review by scientists, doctors, and healthcare professionals. Vaccines will involve some discomfort and may cause pain, redness, or tenderness at the site of injection but this is minimal compared to the pain, discomfort, and trauma of the diseases these vaccines prevent. Serious side effects following vaccination, such as severe allergic reaction, are very rare. The disease-prevention benefits of getting vaccines are much greater than the possible side effects for almost all children.…

At the young age of two I was diagnosed with a disease that did not have a cure. Luckily, I was spared the memory of being diagnosed, but I often wonder what it would be like if I had been diagnosed later in life. I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes, an autoimmune disease that affects the body’s ability to manufacture a hormone called insulin. I have to prick my finger four times a day to get a blood sample to test my blood sugar, which wasn’t easy as a toddler at first, but eventually I became used to it. From the time I was two till when I was five, I had already taken 3,500 insulin shots. On the bright side I no longer have a fear of needles. Fortunately for me, technology became more advanced, and they invented something that would make my life as a diabetic much easier to handle. They invented the insulin pump. The first insulin pump I had looked like an pager that would clip onto the side of my short's, except it had a long clear tube running from it to an injection site on my hip.…

I looked up at the clock I had been there for three hours! My mom was clamed down now. Once they told me I was good to go, they also started to tell me that I was allergic to one of the vaccines or both at once, but that I would never again have to get that vaccination to prevent cervical cancer unless I wanted to have this fun experience again. I giggled and said,” no thank you.” Dr. Zufer and Dr. Maggie finished my check up and told me I could go…

The first one was provided by the ER free of charge, but for them to administer any of the other six shots, it would have cost $7,500 per shot. Instead, the doctors at the ER gave my mom the shots, and taught her how to inject a needle; she had to give me the next six. She recalls that giving me those shots in my puncture site were some of the most painful moments for her as a parent. The following days, I would return to the dog park and play with other dogs. Only four years later, my dad quit his job and moved down here to work for American Airlines. Unfortunately, my mom could not move down, as she couldn’t find a job she liked. My dad was in Texas, and we were across the Mississippi River. Thankfully, since my dad was working for American, he was able to fly up to be with us on the weekends, but only then. While he was gone, I stepped up to fill his spot; I helped around the house and took care of my brother. My life was like this for the next two years, until my mom finally found Parish, and we were a family…

It was a hot summer day in 2010. My sisters, my parents and I were on our way to Canada's Wonderland. my youngest sister loves to talk about everything especially when it comes to something she is very excited about. The "are we there yet?" and "hurry up i am bored sitting back here" get really annoying after a while. the one subject she would not stop talking about, was how much she wanted to go on the roller coasters. I felt my stomach start to ache as she said the "r" word." My friend Cassidy said she liked the big roller coaster there" she mentioned so excitedly. I was definitely not interested in that particular subject. After our 1 hour drive of sitting in a crowded truck with my two annoying sisters we arrived at Canada's Wonderland. i looked up and i could see the top of the roller coaster. It looked to be getting taller and taller the more i looked at it.my mom got me my wrist band and we walked into the park. there were people everywhere and lines as long as the Great Wall of China. well in my eyes they looked that long. I could see in the distance people getting off the 'Night Mare' ride. They could barely stand. Some kid ran straight to the garbage can and threw up. i was hoping that was not going to be me later that day.…

The reason I was in the hospital was because I had to have several sets of tubes put in my ears, because of my hearing loss. I often got picked on, beaten up, and also had my hearing aids broken several times in middle school. I remember one beautiful spring day I was so happy because we had a guest speaker that day. After the speaker had left as the class was heading back to the class room, these two average height popular, snobby girls decided to try and ruin my day. The girls started picking on me that day. I remember these days like it was yesterday, the flowers were blooming and the sun was shining. I also got to wear my favorite green skirt with dark green flowers on it.…
