This assignment addresses retail and commercial activity. It requires that you visit two different types of retail in the Toronto area to assess their character, market orientation and location. You will compare and contrast the two types of retail.
PART A: ANCILLARY RETAIL
Select an underground PATH ancillary retail area south of Richmond Street
according to the first letter of your surname:
• letters A-M part of the underground PATH east of Bay Street;
• N-Z part of the underground PATH west of Bay Street.
• Navigate your ancillary retail system. The best time to walk the system is on a weekday, either at midday or at the close of the work day.
• For a portion (about 45 stores) of the system underground o create a map to note the types of commercial and retail activity. o On your map note the date and time of day that you did this exercise; your information must be current. o Note the proportion of the activities that are retail chains and the proportion that are independents.

Make note of the specific land uses immediately above the part of the system you have mapped.
Make some estimation of the demographic composition of the shoppers. Where do you think these shoppers come from?
Are all the people you see shoppers? When do you think the system is busiest?
Do a pedestrian count for 15 minutes and indicate on the map the location of the count and the number of pedestrians counted.
Is the system easy to navigate? (accessibility) Nope.
Is this public or private space?
Do NOT attempt to interview shoppers or retailers.
