The fact that Hamlet was not the only one in Denmark that was able to see the ghost proves that Hamlet wasn’t insane, nor that the ghost was a creation of his mind. Furthermore, Hamlet wasn’t the first one to see the spirit, as a matter of fact he was the fourth (Horatio, Marcellus, and Bernardo saw it first). It is true that Hamlet entered a delicate mental state after the King, his dad, died and his mother, the Queen, married his uncle. Nonetheless, Hamlet’s mental state worsen after he met the spirit, just like Horatio predicted: “And there assume some other, horrible form/ Which might deprive your sovereignty of reason/ And draw you into madness? (I, 4, 705-707)”.

The evil spirit tormented young Hamlet’s soul once again, and this time it was worst, because it made him look crazy in front of the Queen, his mother: “Mad as the sea and wind when both contend/ Which is the mightier. In his lawless fit/ Behind the arras hearing something stir” (IV, 1, 2633-2635). All the turmoil caused by young Hamlet’s tormented soul made the King and the Queen loss their focus from more important matters, like the fact that young Fortinbras was leading an army towards Denmark.
