Slavery formed the backbone of the South economically. It was just as much the political and social basis of Southern identity, too. With the invention of Eli Whitney’s cotton gin, southern plantation owners had to buy more slaves to keep up with the demand for cotton. There was an ever-present demand, particularly by Northern states, for cotton. There became a growing economic dependence on slavery. James Henry Hammond’s manual, Instructions to His Overseer (c. 1840-1850), was designed for use on his large South Carolina estate. He was a strong supporter of slavery and the originator of the famous line, “Cotton is king.”…

It seems that red pandas eat on the ground. the red panda may live alone, in pairs, or in family groups. Red pandas primarily eat bamboo leaves and fresh shoots, as well as berries, blossoms, bird eggs, and various plants' small leaves. They have a small, bony projection on their wrists that helps them grip bamboo stalks. Giant pandas also have this thumb-like adaptation. The litters generally contain one or two young that are born in spring after a gestation period of about 130 days. The animal is gentle and easily tamed but usually resents being handled. It is a very popular zoo animal and is frequently involved in the animal…

My husband, Bill and I were opposites, but we fit perfectly. I had been with Bill for ten years and could not believe the love of my life was gone. When my husband bill died I received a relatively small inheritance. I received about $20,000, which was not an unpleasant amount in 1936, but wouldn’t last more than a year for a fifth avenue address. This was the last thing that I would spend time dwelling on. My husband decided to go on the expedition with four men with dreams of capturing the giant panda. Though they deserted him long before he passed. I decided that I wouldn’t leave Bill’s mission incomplete- I would pick it up and carry it to victory. In my lifetime several large animals had just been described for the first time. These animals included the mountain gorilla and the velvet-coated cousin to the giraffe the okapi. The Roosevelts were successful in shooting a giant panda on April 13, 1929. Killing a panda brought glory, but capturing one alive would be a historic achievement. On Friday, April 17, 1936 I boarded the Dollar liner American Trader. When I arrived in Hong Kong I truly felt at home. Though, the approach to shanghai was dirty and ugly. The summer in Shanghai was 100 degrees. I began to pick up the language known as pidgin English, a trading tongue that mixed English, Chinese, Indian, and Portuguese and followed the pronunciation idiom and grammar of Chinese. Smith was my husbands partner on the expedition, but I could see he wasn’t up to the task. Besides, teaming with Smith, another large mistake my husband made was getting tangled in the legendary Chinese bureaucracy, which left Bill in Shanghai for months. I soon flew from Beijing to Nanking, but it got cut short due to illness. I had an awful case of bronchitis developing and nearly lost my hearing during the high altitude plane ride. Soon I met the young brothers. They were also interested in catching the giant panda. Shortly, a plan was set in…

Economy writes, “China's current environmental situation is the result not only of policy choices made today but also of attitudes, approaches, and institutions that have evolved over centuries," The Book of Rites is a classic Chinese text contributed by Confucian scholars that has instructions to not leave untapped resources alone (Economy 4). Confucians argued the exploitation of the wealth of nature is needed for the duties of the states to provide the livelihoods needed for the people. Some took this as legitimate reasoning to exploit and manipulate the environments for the ‘glory of the states’. However, this view only accounts for one school of…

I believe we should allow nature to take its course because Pandas are not a valuable resource. We do not use them or need them in any aspect of our survival, it seems to be a waste of costly conservation efforts and funds. There are many other important animals near extinction in dire need of the funds we waste on pandas. If many of these underfunded animals go extinct, it will cause entire ecosystems to perish along with overpopulation, breaks in the food chain and many other serious effects. They are the most expensive animal to be kept in captivity and hold many unsuccessful attempts at being rehabilitated after the breeding process. The panda is not a sustainable species as it is easily susceptible to many diseases, can only eat one food…

The author mainly diagnosed China from six different dimensions: historical, population, international, resource, social, and political. As the author demonstrated in the opening of his book, the developing path that China took was not a smooth one, and modern Chinese history is filled with unintended changes and outcomes. Even in China today, debates exist on whether Mao Zedong’s victory in the Chinese civil war was beneficial to the country in general, or even another step further, how China’s role in the world has evolved from the ancient giant.…

    Summary on China

    • 256 Words

The Chinese government is currently the center of some very negative media criticism. This criticism comes as a result of the rising industrialization of the major cities in this vast country, and the exponential population growth seen by it. However, the negative attention China is receiving has been viewed as unfair and misplaced by many specialists around the globe. The Chinese pollutant emissions at this time, although greatly higher than most countries worldwide, are very comparable to those of western super powers during their time of growth and industrialization. Other areas of the world, such as India Pakistan, and Bangladesh, as well as other less known regions, have much higher pollution levels, with no signs of any preventative measures, or those of these pollution rates decreasing. This negative attention is deemed as a way to contain the threat of China rising to rival the super powers of the world, and its new policy of transparency is making it a very easy target for such media.…

Perhaps you and your beloved ones have enjoyed “Kung Fu Panda” together and been amazed at the well used Chinese elements in a Hollywood movie. The splendid kung fu fighting and the cute characters made it even popular among Chinese. But what I want so say is that this kind of cultural consumption is actually the cultural expansion and colonization from America. They take use of our cultural elements as a mask to advocate their beliefs and values. We are just like cows miked by them and we pay a lot to get our milk back. This is cultural invasion!…
