This assignment should be a reflection on your experience within the introductory period of practice when caring for a patient. This reflection will help you to understand how this experience has addressed one of your identified learning needs.
In this assignment I shall identify and address one of my learning outcomes which has been met on my placement. I shall identify a reflective cycle and explain my reason behind choosing that specific reflective model. One of the learning objectives I set myself was to be confident/accurate in taking a patients vital signs. I choose to use Gibbs reflective model in this assignment as this is a clear reflective model which would enable me to reflect effectively; during my time of practice I learned how to read vital signs accurately and when to raise them issue as a point of concern. It is crucial to understand and recognize when a patients vital signs are of concerns, When raising an issue as a point of concern it is important to let the nurse in charge of that bay know what you have

I think one of the things I could of done differently is encourage the patients to drink more water and stay hydrated.     This essay will reflect on my personal and professional development during my first year on the nursing diploma programme. I will do this by discussing my experience with the five essential skills clusters which include care, compassion and communication, medicine management and nutrition and fluid management. I will relate the five skills by showing an understanding of a recognised model of reflection. Reflection, is a way of analysing past incidents to promote learning and improve safety, in the delivery of health care in practice. For the purposes of this essay I have chosen the Gibbs reflective cycle model (Gibbs, 1988, cited in O’Caroll & Park, 2007, p86), will be followed, as it gives an opportunity to produce a structured account of the discussion. Gibbs (1988) consists of six stages to complete one cycle which is able to improve my nursing practice continuously and learning from the experience for better practice in the future. The cycle starts with a description of the situation, next is to analysis of the feelings, third is an evaluation of the experience, fourth stage is an analysis to make sense of the experience, fifth stage is a conclusion of what else could I have done and final stage is an action plan to prepare if the situation arose again.     The assignment critically discusses a reflective practice with regards to a clinical placement I undertook. In the following critical incident that I encountered I will utilize the Gibbs Reflective Model. Gibbs reflective model is fairly straightforward and encourage a clear description of the situation. Analysis of feelings, evaluation of the experience, analysis to make sense of the experience, conclusion and action plan where other options are considered and reflection upon experience to examine what you would do if the situation arose again (Gibbs 1998). Unlike many other models (with the exception of Boud) Gibbs model takes in to account the realm of feelings and emotions, which played a part in a particular event. My rationale for using the reflection framework to the clinical encounter is to try and demonstrate my ability to link theory to practice during the process of reflection. I also choose the Gibbs model to help me structure this paper. The model was also chosen to help demonstrate critical reflection within my role of being a student in the practice learning environment. Through my discussion I will also be applying the literature which underpins my experiences in practice. The way the reflection would be defined and a brief description of the surgical procedure including the complications which can arise will be also discussed. Siviter (2008) points out that by using a model of reflection as a guide the practitioner can find the process of reflecting easier. Johns (2004) cautions that a model could become a prison that the practitioner tries to fit into rather than a tool to make sense of a situation. I would suggest that a model should be used as a framework by which reflection is structured, but not followed as a rigid guide which could hamper the practitioner’s reflective account.
