GIFTED HANDS: THE BEN CARSON STORY is one of the best made-for-television movies ever produced. It is the true story of a black child raised by a single mother who constantly encouraged him to use his God-given gifts. He grows from being a poor student to the top of his class and then to become a world-famous neurosurgeon. It would be hard not to be inspired by this movie.

As the story begins, Ben (played by Cuba Gooding, Jr.) is asked to attempt a surgery to separate German Raush twins conjoined at the backhead. The movie then flashes back (1961) to show when Ben (as a child played by Jaishon Fisher) was such a poor student, he failed to get a single answer right on a test. I have selected the movie; “The Blind Side”, it is the true story of Michael Oher, a homeless teenager who was able to overcome great obstacles in order to become a first round draft pick in the NFL. Michael Oher had a rough childhood as he didn’t know his father and his mother was addicted to drugs. He was in and out of foster homes and at times living on the street. The football coach at Wingate, a private school, saw football potential in Michael and got him admitted into the prestigious school. However, he had learning disabilities and still did not have a permanent home. Leigh Anne Tuohy, the mother of a Wingate student, and wife of the owner of several Taco Bell restaurants, finds out about Michael’s predicament and invites him to stay the night at their home. Once Michael is in the Tuohy home, a close relationship develops between him and the Tuohys. The one night stay turns into a permanent living situation for Oher. Leigh Anne makes it her personal mission to make sure Michael has everything he needs emotionally and academically to graduate from high school and to get admitted to Ole Miss. After a successful college football campaign, Oher was drafted by the Baltimore Ravens in the first round in 2009, thus fulfilling his dream. This movie has it all. As you watch it, you experience the emotions of both sadness and joy, as you watch this young man go from being homeless to being drafted in the first round of the 2009 NFL…

The film tells a tale of the restless and somewhat misunderstood rebellious and defiant American youth. The film highlights the conformance of 1950s America, through the eyes of the main character, who faces a new school environment and unsporting or ‘loving' parents. Though the film could be seen as bias, by portraying all 1950s youths as rebellious and engaging in "chickie runs" and knife fights, who would rather go against the grain of society, the film instead uses this bias to portray more of the internal seeking of youthful acceptance and love that all teens of this period were seeking, through rebelliousness and acts of promiscuity.…

I think Ben Underwood and the video inspired me alot. The fact that he is blind and doesn't believe it is amazing. He has a great mind set and tells himself he is not blind and nothing is wrong with him is incredible. I think if a blind teenager can teach himself to see then anyone can do anything. They just have to have the right mindset. Ben Underwood doesn’t let anyone tell im he is blind. Ben’s story inspires me to do more things that people tell me I can’t do and it shows me that I can do things better than what I or others think. It makes me feel that I can succeed at anything and become better at anything. It shows me that I should not listen to others when they try to bring me down and say I can’t do something.…

This past weekend I set out to accomplish this extra credit assignment. I viewed the task as just another mediocre film from the 80’s to watch for school. However, I can now say that I am utterly delighted to have viewed the Breakfast Club. This film eloquently covered every serious topic that a high school student has ever pondered: sex, social stratification, tobacco use, parental frustration, marijuana and even suicide. The film begins by an unlikely group of teenagers bound together by collegiate authority in Saturday detention. Each member of the circle brings a different aspect of high school life to light. The “Breakfast Club” is composed of five members: the athlete, the brain, the princess, the basket case, and the criminal. Although very distinctive character traits, I feel that every high school student could relate to certain aspects of at least one character.…

Childhood is a pivotal time in ones life. It is a time where one can use the freedoms he or she has been given to lay foundation and gather information needed to figure out who they are and where they fit in with society. The methods the parents and leaders use in this film to teach their kids, literally tells the kids to “lay down their life for Jesus”. This method of teaching is wrong and can be detrimental to a child’s life in many ways. I would like to discuss some of the ways I believe that these teaching methods can have a harmful effect on these children and why I found it frustrating.…
