Are we aware of our actions or do we react unconsciously? In the article “Immune to
Reality” by Daniel Gilbert, he discusses how humans tend to make up excuses for their behavior in defence to the psychological immune system. While in the article “ The Power of Context” by
Malcolm Gladwell, the author claims that human behavior is greatly dependent on their surroundings. “Immune to Reality” by Daniel Gilbert and “ The Power of Context” by Malcolm
Gladwell allude to the idea that people behave unconsciously; however, Gilbert manifests that people make excuses for their behavior in defense to the psychological immune system and
Gladwell possess that people's behavior is manipulated by surrounding .
According to Gilbert and Gladwell, individuals actions are terminated through the psychological immune system that triggers by itself and the environment which affects the individual's behavior. Daniel Gilbert in the article gives an example of how Wilhelm von Osten claimed that his stallion, Clever Hans was able to answer questions that were based on current events and mathematics. Osten, who spent all his time with his horse to prove to others that he could speak manipulated himself into consideration that his stallion could understand him.
Likewise, “ When we expose ourselves to favorable facts… we are generally no more aware…” because “ we are normally unaware of the processes that change them” (Gilbert 134135). Due to the favorable facts individuals are expose to, individuals tend to generate positive views of their actions unconsciously by cooking facts. The psychological immune system automatically
changes the behavior of the individual depending on the individual's reaction to something. On the other hand,
