The final project for this course is comprehensive, designed to allow you to analyze a psychological disorder by reviewing a short profile of Marla, a 42-year-old accountant. This assignment provides you with a greater understanding of and ability to recognize abnormal behavior. Once you identify a possible disorder, probe deeper by asking questions and completing Marla’s profile. Once you have completed Marla’s profile, suggest possible treatments based on the models of abnormality in Ch. 2. This project reflects the culmination of your knowledge gathered through the readings, discussion questions, CheckPoints, and assignments.…
The movie Shutter Island is based in Boston’s Ashecliffe Hospital located on Shutter Island in 1954. It’s about a Federal Marshal named Teddy Daniels and his new partner, Chuck Aule who are sent to Shutter Island to investigate the disappearance of a patient there, Rachel Solando. She had been put in the institution because she drowned her three kids; However Teddy had been pushing for the assignment on the island for personal reasons, but before long he wonders whether he hasn't been brought there as part of a twisted plot by hospital doctors whose radical treatments range from unethical to illegal to downright sinister, or are they? Teddy's investigating skills (dreams he has while awake and asleep, where his dead wife tells him to what do.) soon provide a promising lead, but the hospital refuses him access to records he suspects would break the case wide open, but how does this movie relate to psychology?…
Pretty Little Liars is a television show based on a set of novels that focuses on the lives of four teenage girls and the struggles that they face daily. After the murder of their cliques Queen Bee, Alison, each girl begins to get harassed and an anonymous bully threatens to expose all of their secrets. They are abused mentally after what seems like a never ending search to discover who the anonymous person that is harassing them is. The strong relationship that the girls maintain through their anxiety ridden high school career shows us that friendship can help to keep you strong. We will be looking specifically at Abnormal Behavior demonstrated throughout the girls high school days; Social identity theory demonstrated by Alison; and bulimia nervosa demonstrated by Hannah, who is targeted for being overweight.…
The movie that I decided to watch was mean girls. This movie is about a teenage girl who lived in Africa because her parents were doing research and then they had all moved to America. The girl’s name in the movie was Cady and she had never been home schooled before she moved to the United States of America. Her first couple of days was rocky but she eventually made friends with two art students by the name of Janis Ian and Damien, her new friends told her to be careful around the popular girls in school known as the plastics. One day while Cady was looking for her friends, a girl by the name of Regina George the main leader of the plastics wanted her to join their group because she thought she was really pretty. Cady becomes a part of the group, but Janis convinces her to get revenge on Regina George because of Janis’s personal experience with Regina. Cady declines on getting revenge until Regina George gets back with her ex-boyfriend Aaron Samuels who Cady liked and Regina claimed she would put in a good word for Cady. Cady then decided that she would get revenge on Regina, so the movie is basically showing how Cady evolved from a sweet girl into a typical teenage girl. The three theories that I decided to pick for this movie were Social Learning theory and Behaviorism. I chose social learning theory because the theory stated that an individual’s behavior will be influenced by the environment around them, and since Cady was around the plastics that always spread mean and vicious rumors she became one of them. I chose behaviorism because Skinner stated behavior is a response to the environment which would explain why Cady decided to get even with Regina because that is what Regina George would do. Another theory that I thought that was displayed in the movie would be Dollard and Miller’s learning process which consisted of five steps, those four steps would be drive, cue, response, reinforcement effect. Drive is defined as a promotion of a specific action.…
Shutter Island is a film depicting several of the many facets of Abnormal Psychology as defined and studied over the course of this term. Several of the concepts discussed in our lectures and demonstrated during our classroom time were evident and vividly depicted in the film including personality disorders past and present; stress and anxiety disorders; psychosis, and mood disorders. There were others subtly displayed in the film however, these listed were of primary focus and coincidence most closely with our study this term. While focusing more on the abnormal, Shutter Island also shares common ground with the film A Beautiful Mind.…
There is one underappreciated factor in John Hughes’ 80s high school movies that make them so good, and that’s the acting. In one of the most well known films to this day, The Breakfast Club, the condescending Mr. Richard Vernon (Paul Gleason) supervises detention where five students with completely different personalities felt trapped, but by being stuck together, they learned they had more in common than they thought possible. There was an athlete, a criminal, a princess, a basket case, and a brain; Andrew Clark (Emilio Estevez), John Bender (Judd Nelson), Claire Standish (Molly Ringwald), Allison Reynolds (Ally Sheedy), and Brian Johnson (Anthony Michael Hall). It was performances such as Ally Sheedy and Judd Nelson’s from The Breakfast…
The nonsuicidal self-injury in young adults based on certain borderline personality disorders can be treated accordingly. If there is no evidence of such mental disorder diagnosed in those patients have no choice of any significant treatment. if untreated or absence of intervention leads to increased harm to the individuals and extent of damage from medical severity to disfiguration of physical elements can occur (Andover, Schatten, Morris, & Miller, 2015, p.491)…
For my movie review I watched Girl Interrupted filmed in 1999 and directed by James Mangold. This is a movie that tells a story about a woman’s stay in the 1960’s on a psychiatric floor in Claymore hospital, after being suspected of suicide. The main character is a 19 year old female named Susana Kaysen who ate an entire bottle of aspirin and then drank a bottle of vodka. The doctor believes that Susana is suffering from Borderline Personality Disorder. Susan quickly finds herself making friends with everyone on the floor.…
The movie I selected to complete my case study on is named Frankie and Alice which is played by actress Halle Berry. This movie depicts real life events of Ms. Francine Murdoch. During Ms. Murdoch’s adolescent years, she experienced many tragedies. She lost the love of her life to a horrible accident which ended in his death, and she lost her infant child at the hands of her mother. In this case study, I will share a few of the symptoms that I observed during this movie. Additionally, I will diagnose the type of mental illness, provide my differential diagnosis, and propose a treatment plan for Ms. Murdoch’s condition. Mental illness often can go undiagnosed. Properly identifying symptoms of mental illness in it's early stages could save a life.…
Inside Out is a movie based on how an individual’s five main core emotions interact in the brain, which is called the headquarters. Throughout the movie, it is shown how much emotions impact an individual’s memories and everyday life. Also, the movie shows different concepts of how everything goes on in the brain in a fun, kid friendly, easy understanding way. Inside Out is about the life of Riley who is 11-year-old and in her preteens (tweens) or middle childhood. And it follows her life inside her head and the outside and general point of view, when she moves from Minnesota to San Francisco, California.…
The thoughts, feelings and actions of an individual constitute his/her personality. As a person grows physically, they go from wanting to satisfy their desires to making conscious, realistic decisions, and finally to developing conscience based on the values of society and culture. Freud proposed that these three stages make up the personality of an individual. Maintaining a reasonable balance among all three components is important for developing good mental health. The study of psychological disorders has shown that they do not just happen out of the blue. They are usually caused by certain experiences in our childhood, which result in a conflict between the conscious and unconscious mind. Such is the case of Jessica in case study 1,…

Susanna’s mother is does not know how to deal with her daughter’s illness. Susanna took a cab to the Claymore rather than going with her mother. When the institution’s psychologist discusses Susanna’s diagnoses, her mother became upset and she was not present for Susanna. Also, she was more concerned with what people at the family Christmas party would think if Susanna were not there, rather than having her daughter home for the holiday (Wick & Mangold, 1999). According to the article; Affective behavior during mother–daughter conflict and borderline personality disorder severity across adolescence, adolescent girls show improvement with symptoms of borderline personality disorder when their mother supplies commutative, supportive behavior to the daughter. Borderline personality disorder was triggered in Susanna due to her mother’s inability to be supportive. Her mother’s behavior negatively influences her, which is supported by the information in this article. The articles purpose is to record how an adolescent’s borderline personality disorder is shaped and maintained with certain parent-child interactions. For three consecutive years, 15-17 year old adolescent girls report their symptoms of borderline personality disorder. Mothers and daughters complete questioners that are designed to produce conflict and negative emotion. The Revised Interactional Dimensions…
Girl, interrupted does indeed portray the psychological disorder accurately. Borderline personality disorder (BPD) you are often having a insecure sense of who you are, your self-image, self identity or sense of self often rapidly change. Symptoms of borderline personality order consist of impulsive behavior, wide mood swings, feeling misunderstood, alone, empty, and suicidal thoughts. Susana engages herself with promiscuous actions like sleeping with her mother’s friends husband. Susan also attempted suicide by taking a whole bottle of aspirin and washing it down with vodka. While in the emergency room, Susana claims that she doesn’t have bones in her wrist, and grew back upon arrival at the hospital. While her stay in the asylum Susana takes part in some impulsive behavior by running away with Lisa another patient in the asylum. Susana strikes as the kind of person who doesn’t belong in a place like this and is a nice girl. One of the nurses Valarie who is an exceptional nurse can’t be a doctor due to her ethnicity. Susana always respected Valarie until she picked up the behavior from Lisa and cussed out Valarie, which would be an example of her mood swings…
When we define abnormal behavior we must keep in mind that “normal” differs from culture to culture. What it is normal for a person from India is completely strange for a person from Europe, Colombia or Japan. To determine whether a person’s behavior is abnormal psychologist use three basic criteria as follows: Deviation from statistical norms and social norms, maladaptive behavior, and personal distress. If the individual’s behavior is considered “abnormal”, mental health professionals use the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) as a methodical tool to aid in the diagnosis and treatment of the patient. This paper will focus on the exploration of personality disorder and more specifically antisocial personality disorder. To analyze this mental illness I will reflect on the film “Girl interrupted” mainly focusing on Lisa Rowe, her mental illness, behavior, and experiences during her stay in a mental institution.…
