The concept of Girl Power can be applied on the movie Legally Blonde and the TV series Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Both main protagonists, Elle Woods and Buffy Summers, incarnate the stereotypical symbols of femininity. Both characters exemplify that the embracement of fashion and style in order to save their friends. In the following I will argue that the protagonist Buffy Summers from the TV series Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Elle Woods from Legally Blonde are not only an example for the reshaping term feminism but also function as heroines by using their knowledge in fashion and style in order to save their female friends. For the most part, stereotypical gender roles exist because society chooses to accept them, but it is easy to say that the media is a profoundly influential source to the problem. We constantly see gender stereotypes in film and television, where the man is portrayed to be the strong, dominant character; he is the breadwinner and the hero, while the woman is a damsel in distress waiting to be rescued. This type of representation of women is quite the opposite in film noir. The classic femme fatale of film noir is a strong and confident woman who disrupts traditional family values; she refuses to play the typical role that society prescribes. Instead, the femme fatale uses her beauty to manipulate men in order to achieve power and independence.…

In “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes”, directed by Howard Hawks, Anita Loos uses the vapidity of her main female character Lorelei Lee as a satirical reflection of the shallowness of the men which surround her. Specifically, Lorelei is portrayed as being superficially focused on material wealth, while the men who want her are represented as being equally superficial in their interest in her physical beauty. In a broader sense, Loos used the background of upper-class America in the Jazz Age as an object of ridicule. The concept of the ‘gold-digger’ was manifested in the character of the blonde Lorelei Lee which gives insight in how blonde women were perceived during that time period. Nothing concerned her as much as money and diamonds and that shows that othe than being extremely seductive, blondes are nothing but materialistic.…

Film has proven to be a medium through which society frames its expectations of gender performance and derives its accepted societal norms. This paper will call attention to how “chick flicks”, and in particular how the sub-genre of makeover films influence how women are expected to portray their femininity. The Devil Wears Prada is a perfect example of a makeover film within the chick flick genre. The “chick flick” genre is often described as movies that are meant to serve as entertainment for women that examine independent and self-sufficient heroines that portray female empowerment. Within the worlds of “Blacksad” and “Watchmen” women are portrayed in a stereotypical way. They are not seen at the same scale as the men within their respective universes; instead, they are seen as symbols of sex. And through being viewed as sex symbols, the women gain their power. Although the women from their respective universes differ with how this power is used. Some use their sexuality to their advantage to try and gain something from those around them, while some are given this power of sexuality and it is used against them, creating negative biases or people misinterpreting their sexaulity, or it just does not work in their favor. “Blacksad” reveals how the power of sexuality works to benefit the women; while “Watchmen” uses the power…

Unfortunately, women have repeatedly suffered from a narrow set of representations in the media. They are regularly linked to the domestic situation i.e. housewives, or as sexual objects represented to entertain men. Furthermore, “the number of roles for leading women is far below that of men.” Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle is the film I’ve chosen explore and there several reasons behind this. I’ve chosen this text because it portrays women within dominant roles. Furthermore, the concept behind it breaks the pre-existing norm of women being the sexual object that entertains the male hero/spy. This isn’t the case in this film, they’re heroes fighting crime and saving the day. Not only are they stunning and beautiful but they also possess skills that crush and challenge existing stereotypes about women which is exactly why I chose this film.…

Julie D. O’Reilly states that women are objectified in mainstream pop-culture, specifically in comic books and television in her publication, “The Wonder Woman Precedent: Female (Super) Heroism on Trial” (O’Reilly, 442). However, few ever discuss the differences in male and female objectivity in defining bias against gender. In fact, I would venture to argue that the author sympathizes with women and overstates female objectification by injecting her own bias into comic books and television.…

Millions of girls will grow up thinking that this is the right way to act, that they can never be more than vacuous ninnies whose only goal is to look pretty, land a rich husband, and spend all day on the phone with their equally vacuous friends talking about how damn terrific it is to look pretty and have a rich husband. (Oakley, Weinstein & Lynch, 1994) Lisa decides to take action and, with the help of the original creator of Malibu Stacy, she designs a new talking doll, Lisa Lionheart. This doll only has one phrase, but it is a fitting summary of Lisa’s feminist beliefs: “Trust in yourself and you can achieve anything!” While the series is not always this feminist when it comes to its storylines and characters, it does offer viewers a complex combination of the strengths and weaknesses every real-life human being…

Motor unit recruitment is the sequential activation of motor units to perform a certain task. In this lab we examined motor unit recruitment and muscle fatigue by electromyography (EMG) with dynamometry (DYN). When the motor unit in the muscle is activated signals are then generated, which result in muscle contraction. The impulse generated are a bit weak, yet can still be detected by the electrodes, EMG and is coupled by a measurements of power, DYN. When all the motor units reach its maximum strength the muscles will fatigue. Finally, the objectives of this lab were to determine the maximum clench strength for the right and left hand. To observe, record and correlate motor unit recruitment with increase power of skeletal muscle contraction. As well, as to record the force produces by the clenching muscles and integrated EMG during fiber recruitment and inducing fatigue.…
