Challenges A Girl Faces In “What Is the Triple Bind?” Stephen Hinshaw describes all the obstacles and hard work that teenage girls have to go through. Girls get put down a lot and that’s why they feel under pressure when they are trying to do something. Some people are against girls when it comes to a job because of their weaknesses, but they never take a look at their strengths. Hinshaw explains girls getting plastic surgery because make up is no longer good for them to look pretty; therefore, girls absolutely have it harder than boys in today’s society. A girl can be put through a lot in her life. She has to put up with the children and make sure the food is ready when the man comes home from work. All the guy has to do is go to work and come back home to his family. The girl has to clean the house, take the children to school and make everything look perfect before the guy gets mad. In describing most girls hard life’s, Hinshaw points out “Despite the apparent wealth of choices, our girls are ultimately presented with a very narrow, unrealistic set of standards that allow for no alternative”(305). The only way that a girl will become a woman is if she turns herself into an object. Statistics say that there are about 4,400 suicide deaths per year. Girls with the age of 10 to 14 are even at a higher risk for suicides(Bullying and Suicide). Many people will bully girls because they think that they might be weak. Not all the girls are weak but the ones who are tend to have suicidal thoughts. Verbal bullying is the main reason why girls commit suicide and not physical bullying.

All girls are always being put down when it comes to driving. Many people say that they can’t drive so they shouldn’t be driving. Some people also make jokes like saying that girls are the reason why

Throughout the course of the Girlstories seminar, we have discussed many narratives that center around the environments that women develop in. These environments shape their beliefs, their thoughts, and their characterization. The films, Killing Us Softly and Thirteen, apply this idea to a realistic setting that many young girls experience. Around the time of puberty, many young girls find themselves in a vulnerable state as their bodies and their minds develop and mature. These films highlight the enormous pressure and dangers that adolescent girls face due to the environment that society provides.…

Girls as young as nine are roaming the internet finding pictures and videos of female living unrealistic lives and bodies. According to Polce, Barbara, etc. “Media's messages regarding what to wear, or more invasively, what to weigh and how to sculpt muscles, may relate to adolescent worries about physical appearance and self-evaluations. Additional empirical investigation of the association between contemporary media influences and self-esteem is needed, with attention given to age and gender patterns” (Polce-Lynch, Mary, Barbara J. Myers, Wendy Kliewer and Christopher Kilmartin. 2001) demonstrating that Media can affect young women in more ways than just one. It tells them to be up to date with all the latest styles, brands, and…

Women are constantly unrealistically portrayed; they are objectified and hyper sexualized in the media. The documentary features the difficulties women have to go through when their ideals are unobtainable and the pressure they feel when people want them to look a certain way. These images allow women to think that their body is the only voice they have, it’s the only tool to identify themselves and that this is their worth. Jean Kilbourne quoted beautifully, “Girls are being encouraged to achieve that ideal at younger and younger ages all the time. They end up measuring themselves against an impossible standard and feeling themselves wanting as a result of it.” Miss Representation showed ordinary high school students speaking about the issues they felt about the negative perceptions of women. We were able to understand the pain and pressure young women have to face everyday to conform to this ideology of beauty. It makes it difficult for teenagers because if they do not look…

Bullying is not an action we wish to see or experience. Girl-to-girl bullying is not wished upon as well, especially when you are apart of it. Since the beginning of my school education I seemed to become a magnet of bullies. In elementary school, I tried to be helpful towards others. I assisted with homework, cleaned up after activities, and I even did most of the work in group projects because the other kids groaned and complained about it. Unfortunately, due to my acts of being helpful I was called, "dog" by the girls who wore nicer clothes than I did. That nickname stuck around until 4th grade because of the fact I'd listen to anyone who'd ask for help. I was even called, "Heavy" as a supposed nickname for "Heaven" when it has been to call me fat. Around 5th grade,…

Growing up in any culture there are rules and traditions on how a child should act. As they grow up there are still those rules, but they become more unspoken rules that are socially accepted. These are the pressures of becoming an adult and fitting into the world around you. For girls these pressures are even more extreme due to the burden of being the “weaker” sex. This term is changing, but it is changing because it is now expected of girls to do things just as well, or better than their male counterpoints. Girls are supposed to be smart, docile, attractive, strong, self-sufficient, and all around the best at what they do. The triple bind is helpful to teenage girls because the triple bind helps girls strive for excellence in every activity they do to be just as good, or better than, boys.…

Imagine that you are a thirteen year crying in your bed because you are dreading facing another day at school because you are being bullied. Nowadays, this is more common than ever before. For far too many teens this is a daily reality. According to the ASPCC (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children) there are over 160,000 students in America who stay home from school every day because they are fearful of the mental and physical abuse from their classmates (1). The ASPCC defines bullying as a direct attack on a child’s status, sense of belonging and core identity and more times than not leads to low self-esteem (2). 1 out of 4 children are bullied every day (3). Bullying in any shape, form or fashion must be stopped so that our children can have a fighting chance.…
