The items from the past speak of opulence, elegance and status that t remain ever popular in the present days – some call it classics while others deem it as collectors’ items. Whatever one chooses to name it, fashion houses are capitalising on fashion trends of today and bringing the trends from the past back to the runway. A fashion house that is creating ripples of admiration is Givenchy with its Fall/Winter 2013 collection for women.
Hubert de Givenchy, one of the first and most important haute couture designers worldwide, set the trends of Parisian fashion and defined elegance worldwide and fast forward to the present and the Parisian luxury label currently designed by Riccardo Tisci, still preserves the code set by Hubert de Givenchy: playing with a palette of non-colours, grey, black, white and beige, to better outline an uncluttered silhouette while adding the personalised touch of Riccardo which is mainly dark romantic. Together they make Givenchy one of the most appreciated brands in the world.
An array of bag collections was unveiled at recent preview of Givenchy’s FW 2013 collection, and among them, the HDG and Antigona - two of this season’s collections stand taller than the rest. It is fast becoming the IT bags to be seen on the arms of stars, celebrities and the likes of them. Creating a collection after iconic individuals is a way of immortalising these icons and to ensure their presence lingers with the brand for generations to come, and the HDG pays homage to the man who put Givenchy on the fashion map of the world.
The Givenchy HDG Fall collection is Riccardo Tisci’s perception of a French couture house creating a bag for the dynamic urban woman. It is about class and elegance with a hint of

Miuccia Prada was born in Milan on May 10, 1949 into a family of luxury leather goods manufacturers (Craven, 2008). Throughout the 1970s she was a champion for women’s rights and infamously part of the Italian Communist Party (Craven, 2008). In 1977, she met her husband and now business partner Patrizio Bertelli, who is now the driving force behind her business (Galloni, 2010). It was not until after she finished her PhD in Political Science, and a five-year stint studying mime at the Teatro Picco, that she took over her family’s business in 1978 (Craven, 2008). By 1985 Miuccia Prada had already created her first breakthrough line: black, unlabeled, finely woven, nylon handbags that…

The market for handbags and accessories is very large. Not only do women purchase these items for themselves, but men also purchase them for the women on such occasions as birthdays, anniversaries, Valentine’s Day, Christmas, etc. These brand name handbags such as Coach and Louis Vuitton come with a hefty price, but consumers still buy them. What makes these designer bags worth the extra money? Today there is more of a focus on the name of the designer and how much you paid for it. In recent years, majorities of people across the world consider ‘fashion’ as a status symbol and see it as a sign of growth and prosperity. Fashion is a general term for a popular style or practice, especially in clothing, footwear, accessories, make-up etc. The word ‘Fashion’ refers to a distinctive; however, often-habitual trend in a look and dress up of a person, as well as to prevailing styles in behavior. Generally speaking, it is the latest creations made by designers and is bought and used by only a limited number of people immediately after its launch. However, often those fashions are translated into more established trends. Technically speaking, the term, ‘costume,’ has become so linked in the public eye with the term "fashion" that the more general term "costume" has in popular use mostly been relegated to special senses like fancy dress or masquerade wear, while the term "fashion" means clothing generally, and the study of it. For a broad cross-cultural look at clothing and its place in modern society, refer to the entries for clothing, costume and fabrics. Moreover, fashion icons and fashion leaders are closely related to the huge crowds who like fashion and followed fashion. This project work tries to highlight and analyze the differences between the identity and transmission route of China and Britain's fashion icon and fashion leader. The idea of this project…

    Harrington Collection

Although Harrington Collection’s market research conveyed that less than 2% of respondents believed this would occur. Thus, in order for Vigor’s expansion to be successful, they must continue to underpin the core values of their brand and provide customers with a consistent and reliable experience in relation with previous products. In the past Harrington Collection has been well known for its top in-house design staff, extensive national advertising campaigns, and its exceptional quality and styling. Therefore the quality of the new collection must be synonymous with the rest of the Vigor products. In turn it is important that Harrington Collection continues to in-house produce as superior quality is one of their competitive advantages and furthermore this allows the company to have adequate control over quality. This is an imperative factor, because if an unacceptable piece of clothing made it out into the public the ramifications would be irreparable to the Harrington Collection’s brand name and value. Lastly, it is important to have fast turn around time within the fashion industry due to the constant changes in demand for particular designs and…

Parsons The New School for Design, beginning Januray 22nd, was exhibiting the original design creations of Sophie Gimbel, champion of American Couture and Parsons benefactor, in the Aronson Gallery at the Sheila C. Johnson Design Center until February 12, 2013. The exhibit curated by Beth Dincuff, a part-time assistant professor, in conjunction with Saks Fifth Avenue, displays and provides an insight into Gimbel’s original design creations. It encompassed a wide-range of American and European 20th century garments, featuring 17 original pieces from the Parsons Fashion Archive made by the Salon Modern artisans; pieces of which I will be presenting pictures subsequently in this essay. My favorite pieces being the cocktail dress with appliqued chinoiserie figures, the taffeta dress with under-structure of boning and tulle, the cocktail dress with streaming bows and pearlescent sequins, the evening dress with pin tucks set into “hand-span” waist, the “harlequinade” velvet/satin dress with net overlays and, the sequined evening sheath with confectionary tulle overskirt. Each piece is crafted with notable precision and high quality materials down to the last sequined detail.…

In my opinion Alexander McQueen is a bold, unique and over the top designer. I love his style and his designs. McQueen was very obsessed with the afterlife. The vintage looking bag now has more appeal and meaning to me as a worn bag with cracked leather, than I think it would have had if it were brand new. The object is explored here in relation to meaning and consumption. Firstly, the colours of the bag are earthy tones of brown and camel. This shows that the bag must have been produced as part of an autumn-winter collection.…

    Women in Trousers

When we pause to celebrate the successes of Yves Saint Laurent, we stumble upon the words “since Chanel” (Berge 1997, 7) time and time again. Yves Saint Laurent’s 1962 suit collection has endlessly been recognised as, “the best collection of suits since Chanel” (Mercury 2008). This comparison is supported by Valerie Steele, noted fashion historian, who boldly suggests that “more than any other designer since Chanel, Yves Saint Laurent represented Paris as the style leader” (Barker 2008). It is therefore undoubtable that Chanel and Yves Saint Laurent, through their designs, embody corresponding aesthetics that encourage such attributions of each other’s work to continue to be referenced in fashion history. This essay constructs an analytical contrast of both Chanel’s and Yves Saint Laurent’s interpretations of the androgynous aesthetic and how they align. Their portrayal of androgyny, more specifically “putting women into trousers” (Sischy 1998), inherently coincides with the social and cultural movements of the 1920s and 1970s; in specific reference to the role that the feminist movement of these eras played in inspiring the social statements made by these designers. An artistic breakdown of imagery will be utilised in this essay to compare the two designer’s personal, stylistic and social contributions through their designs.…

My love for art and fashion has developed since my childhood. I had taken continuous external art lessons (such as charcoal drawing and traditional Chinese painting for years) in China and joined Art Club and Photographic Society after I came to Singapore. During my tour to Paris and Rome, I was first time stunned by the cities’ perfect fusion of fashion and its ambience. Just like what Grace Codington said in the documentary September Issue, I always kept my eyes open during the trip, because “inspiration for fashion is everywhere”.…
