Hydrocarbons are compounds that only contain carbon and oxygen atoms. Alkanes, alkenes, alkynes and aromatic rings are the four classifications of hydrocarbons. Each of these classifications have different physical and chemical properties that were tested as this experiment was performed. Flammability test and solubility test were done to understand and compare the physical properties of the hydrocarbons. Several reactions such as Bromination, oxidation, and the addition of sulfuric acid were done to understand the chemical properties as well as the possible products that may form by each of the classification of hydrocarbons. Preparation of acetylene was also done in this experiment. The properties of the formed acetylene such as the reaction of the acetylene as it undergo Ammoniacal silver nitrate test, Bromination and oxidation. The reagents that were used to perform this experiment were benzene, cyclohexane, concentrated H2SO4, Calcium Carbide, 1.0 M Br2 in CCl4, cyclohexane, and 1.0 M KMnO4. The apparatuses that were used are micro test tubes, 2.0 mL pipet, iron clamp, 8-in test tube, evaporating dish, water trough, small corks, and iron stand. To group were able to meet the objectives of this experiment since the procedures for this experiment were done properly. The group was able to differentiate the classifications of hydrocarbons from one another. The characteristic reactions of the alkanes, alkenes, alkynes and aromatic hydrocarbons were properly visualized by the group. The group was able to witness the preparation of acetylene gas, and the chemical reactions it may undergo.…

Abstract The imminent ban of environmentally harmful tributyltin (TBT)-based paint products has been the cause of a major change in the antifouling paint industry. In the past decade, several tin-free products have reached the commercial market, and claimed their effectiveness as regards the prevention of marine biofouling on ships in an environmentally friendly manner. The main objective of this review is to describe these products in as much detail as possible based on the knowledge available in the open literature. This knowledge has been supplemented by means of performance data provided, upon request, by some of the paint-producing companies. An exhaustive review of the historical development of antifouling systems and a detailed characterisation of sea water are also included. The need for studies on the behaviour of chemically active paints under different sea water conditions is emphasised. In addition, the most common booster biocides used to replace TBT-containing compounds are listed and described. It must be stressed that there is still a lack of knowledge of their potential environmental side effects. The current interest in providing innovative antifouling technologies based on an improved understanding of the biological principles of the biofouling process is also considered in this review. From the analysis of the factors affecting the biofouling process, the interference with the settlement and attachment mechanisms is the most promising environmentally benign option. This can be accomplished in two main ways: imitation of the natural antifouling processes…

Chemical waste is managed in various ways, some which are environment friendly and some which are hazardous. It has effects on water supply, fertility of the soil, climate, health of individuals, et.c. What really matters is how well this waste is managed. Chemical waste management typically includes the collection, transportation, processing and recycling/disposal of chemical waste. In past times, it was the role of the country to control chemical waste management but recently it has attracted the concern of some international organizations. The technique that some of these international organizations are trying to inculcate into developing countries is the sound management of chemicals (SMC). Sound management of chemicals (SMC) is the application of managerial best practices to chemicals through their life cycle to prevent and, where this is not possible, to reduce or minimize the potential for exposure of people and the environment to toxic and hazardous chemicals. As each type of waste or chemical demands a unique method for processing and disposing, developing countries often do not recognize or acknoledge this difference. Therefore, these international organizations are working on methods and means by which these developing countries can conform to the standards adopted by the developed countries and improve their chemicals management regime, UNDP assists countries integrate the Sound Management of Chemicals (SMC) into national development.…
