Introduction In this paper, there are two lessons that show the importance of cultural sensitivity. Students will learn the importance of character education and Social Studies in a local and global setting so they may be better people now and in the future. Learning these lessons early on in a safe school community will better prepare them for their journey into the global scene as positive and productive citizens. Starting out with lesson on respect, stereotypes and cultural awareness is a good start to preparing children. These lessons should be ongoing as possible in the classroom all year long.
Lesson Plans
Plan: #1 …show more content…
-Explain that people from many cultures bake bread, but not everyone's bread looks or tastes the same.
-Identify shapes, sizes, colors, special ingredients, baking methods, and which culture each bread represents.
-Decorate tables with national flags, art, and maps showing where each bread originally came from.
-Divide children into small groups.
-Move from table to table, tasting breads.
-At each table, have children sign their name on a log sheet at each table and check a smiley face or a sad face icon to indicate their opinion of the bread.
-Count and record the number of smiley/sad faces.
-Chart the results on the large note pad.
Closure: (Share-Process-Reflect-Journal-Self-assessment)
To end activity:
-Review the data and share opinions & reactions. Review why we should respect others and how we can have that type of behavior with others.
-If time & weather permits take a nature walk and spread breadcrumbs for the birds to enjoy!
