Global Warming: Fact or Fiction

Unit 1 Individual Project

Abstract
In this paper I will be discussing the advantages on why we should support the protection of Global Warming. Now yes there are disadvantages as well. But the only ones that are suffering are the big industrial companies and commercial auto transport makers. If you step back and look at the big picture it really will out weight all outs.

For the past decade global warming has been a very big issue among the Congress, Senators and President. Global warming tends to have a dramatic impression on the weather. What this means is places that normally do not see snow in the winter are now having white Christmases. To have a better understanding first you must understand the definition of global warming. Global warming is an increase in the earth’s surface temperature caused by natural or even humanly ways that are destroying the plant as well. The greenhouse effect is understood by the greenhouse gases in our atmosphere that are leading to a big increase of thermal radiation near our surface. The greenhouse effect too many scientists all have been in agreeance that the rising temperature from global warming. Another effect from the global warming is the Arctic ice cap. The polar ice cap has melted more than 30,000 square miles since the last reading which was in 2007.     Global warming is the gradual increase in the temperature of the earth's atmosphere and oceans, mostly caused by the greenhouse effect. The greenhouse effect is where incoming short-wave solar radiation from the sun can pass through the earth’s atmosphere to reach the surface; some of this radiation is then reflected back into space at a longer wavelength. Greenhouse gases in the atmosphere absorb some of this long wave radiation and re-radiate it back to the earth’s surface, trapping heat in our atmosphere. There have always been natural fluctuations in the earth’s temperature, for the last 2.5 million years earth has shifted between cold glacial periods, and warmer interglacial periods. We are currently in an interglacial period, where the temperatures have been warm, with very small fluctuations for the last 10,000 years. Over the last century global temperatures have increased rapidly, there was a sharp rise in temperature between 1900 and 2000 of 0.7oC. Most scientists agree that this sharp increase was caused by human activities (anthropogenic).     The sky is falling, the sky is falling! Growing up I heard this phrase in folktales as a “wolf cry”-- a cry that is so ridiculous that nobody would believe it.     With the rise in the Machine Age during the late 1800’s, early scientists believed that the byproducts released by these new machines would have adverse effects on the environment.     The threat of Global Warming is real and as severe as Al Gore makes it to be in his film “An Inconvenient Truth”. Humans are contributing to climate change. There is proof that we see in our everyday lives such as major increases in natural disasters, Antarctica, and the raise in carbon dioxide levels.
