SENECA COLLEGE OF APPLIED ARTS AND TECHNOLOGY
FACULTY OF TECHNOLOGY
Civil Engineering Technician/Civil Engineering Technology
SUBJECT OUTLINE
SUBJECT TITLE: Mathematics I SUBJECT CODE: MTA 001
SUBJECT DESCRIPTION:
This subject covers the fundamentals of trigonometry and algebra. Areas of study include the primary trigonometric functions, solving triangles, algebraic expressions and operations, the solution of linear equations, graphing, and plane geometry. Emphasis is placed on developing problem solving techniques by applying the topics to related engineering problems.
CREDIT STATUS:
One subject credit.
PREREQUISITES:
Admission to first semester of a CBE program.
LEARNING OUTCOMES:
Upon successful completion of this subject the student will be able to:
Identify the significant role that basic level mathematics plays in engineering technology; Demonstrate effective basic level mathematics skills, in an individual activity, by applying appropriate fundamental principles and concepts in the solution of a given set of conditions; Demonstrate effective analytical skills in selecting the appropriate area of mathematics, as an individual activity, to be used in the solution of a given set of conditions; In an individual activity, effectively evaluate a calculated solution's appropriateness to a given engineering solution; Demonstrate effective transferable problem-solving skills, in an individual activity, by converting appropriate numerical information into acceptable visual representation, facilitating analytical solution.
MODE OF INSTRUCTION:
Lectures and discussions supplemented by independent study based on text references
