Global Warming Outline
Thesis: How is global warming and greenhouse gases affecting our environment?
I. What is global warming?
A.) Global warming is when the earth heats up (the temperature rises). It happens when greenhouse gases (carbon dioxide, water vapor, nitrous oxide, and methane) trap heat and light from the sun in the earth’s atmosphere, which increases the temperature. II. What is the greenhouse effect?
A.)T he greenhouse effect is when the temperature rises because the sun’s heat and light is trapped in the earth’s atmosphere. Example: when heat is trapped in a car on a very hot day, the car gets hotter when it is out in the parking lot. This is because the heat and light from the sun can get into the car, by going through the windows, but it can’t get back out. B.) Two different types of greenhouse effect: a.) "natural" greenhouse effect (Earth's climate) b.) "man-made" greenhouse effect (burning of fossil fuels)
III. What are greenhouse gasses?
A.) Gasses are gasses are in the earth’s atmosphere that collect heat and light from the sun.
a.) carbon dioxide-Chemical formula CC2 is a chemical compound composed of two oxygen atoms covalently bonded to a single carbon atom. It is a gas at standard temperature and pressure and exists in Earth's atmosphere in this state. b.) water vapor- can be produced from the evaporation of boiling liquid water or from the sublimation of ice. c.) nitrous oxide- (N2O) known as "laughing gas" and it is a colorless non-flammable gas, with a slightly sweet odor and taste. d.) methane- in the atmosphere is eventually oxidized, producing carbon dioxide and water.
IV. Ways to stop global warming A.) Recycle B.) Cut down less trees/ Plant tress C.) Use efficient cars and appliances D.) Carpool E.) Use low
