Global Warming: a Critique
Global warming: A critique
Mihir Kulkarni 12D020007 ES 200
Great movies, they say, make you think. And the two movies I’ve seen in the past week certainly have. While Al Gore’s multi-million grossing and revolutionary documentary An Inconvenient Truth seemed have to strongly entrenched pre-existing beliefs about the massive role of humans in global warming, the movie I saw just a couple of days later in LCH seemed to challenge all of them. Was almost everything we’d been hearing about our in global warming a lie? The Great Global Warming Swindle certainly seemed to suggest that, and much more. But such reactions are momentary. The rational person must necessarily analyze and critique the contents any self-proclaimed sources of information before forming any conclusions. So what do we have? It’s important here to note that both movies acknowledge that global warming does indeed occur. All scientific studies point towards this fact, so it is reasonable to assume that global temperatures have consistently been rising over the past 30 or so years. An Inconvenient Truth relies primarily on Al Gore’s riveting personality, gripping story and brilliant communication skills, backed up by what seems like solid scientific data and statistics covering a whole range of causes and effects. Through Gore’s experiences, it tries to show us how the Earth is being irrevocably altered by global warming. Pictures often convey what thousand words can’t, and the melting of ice the world over depicts a bleak reality. The movie displays data and statistics which show a strong correlation between the level of CO2 in the atmosphere and global temperature, which one would find very convincing. This is particularly evident in the past few years, where both CO2 levels and global temperatures seem to have skyrocketed. It showcases the opinions of leading scientists the world over, each reinforcing the statement that it is indeed humans who majorly cause global warming, and something urgently needs to be done to stop it. The fact that it’s presented as an almost personal crusade by Gore and his supporters adds a wonderful human touch. As he says, it is really not a political issue, so much as a moral one. It goes on to show us how we can change the situation and why we must. The movie received an overwhelmingly positive response, going on to win awards at most major events and achieving success that was unheard of for documentaries at the box office. More importantly, it changed the mindsets of tens of thousands of people around the world. While it did receive criticism for possible misrepresentation and vested interests, it by and large impressed both viewers and the

scientific community; the latter expressing pleasant surprise at how accurately the facts had been portrayed. The Great Global Warming Swindle tries to drive home the belief that the whole theory of humans being the single biggest agent for driving global warming is bunkum. It tries to showcase it as something backed by political and economic causes, rather than science, and claims that the real reasons for global warming are things beyond our control, such as (majorly) the Sun’s cycles, animal respiration, and volcanic activity. It claims vested interests by media bodies and certain powerful institutions, and that anyone who is anti-establishment is swiftly made to pay. It especially targets the IPCC and the scientific establishment. It shows correlation between sunspot activity and global temperature, which to a layman seem very revealing. It claims that while CO2 levels do show a correlation with temperature, the power of CO2 as a greenhouse gas is limited, overpowered by water vapour and methane. It asserts that harmful effects of the movement are an unhealthy focus on human-caused global warming, severe restrictions on developing nations that are cruel on the poor people living in them, and an overall wastage of resource, leading to economic slowdown. It is natural to reflect and analyze both viewpoints. After discussion with various other people and some research of my own on the Internet, the opinion I have formed is that while the Swindle does make points that are more than worth considering, its fundamental argument is flawed. After countless studies and experiments, if a majority of experts and scientists still maintain outright that it is humans , through CO2 emissions, who cause majority of the global warming; then either there’s a conspiracy on a scale previously unheard of, or the second movie has stated some things that need to be investigated further. While the makers of Swindle will have us believe in the first, let us for a moment consider the second option. 1. The effect of the sun: Solar variation theory, which talks about the effect of the sun on our climate, is still not complete by any means. At the same time, a 1997 study by the National Academy of Sciences in the USA concluded that solar activity was indeed the driving force behind climate, but in the pre- industrial era. The situation is different now. While experts on solar variation theory do differ among themselves as to the current extent of its effect on our climate, they generally agree on one thing: That the marked increase in global temperature from around 30 years ago is mainly due to humans and their greenhouse gas emissions.

Most of the statistics presented in the movie were conclusively proved to be either partially or wrongly represented, or to be out of date, with the solar variation theory being systematically debunked. 2. The role of water vapour: This one is a bit tricky. The science presented in Swindle seems perfect. Water vapour is indeed a more powerful greenhouse gas than CO2, and is present in concentrations which are around ten times that of it. So why do we blame CO2? The way water vapour works is that it amplifies the already existing greenhouse effect, and while it has played a part in increasing global temperatures worldwide, it works only if there are other greenhouse gases(majorly CO2) that create the global warming in the first place. To quote http://knowledge.allianz.com , CO2 is the guy robbing the bank; water vapor is just the getaway driver. 3. Is CO2 the major culprit for global warming? By all accounts, yes. The data says that the levels of heating in the past few years are unnatural, and so are the levels of CO2, or more generally, greenhouse gases. In fact, studies have shown that it is the heat retention in our atmosphere which has increased, overpowering any external factors. Since retention is primarily caused by greenhouse gases (a well documented fact), and CO2 is the big daddy of them all (crossing 400ppm recently and ever increasing), it is pretty much reasonable to assume that it is the major cause of global warming. 4. Are humans responsible? Again, the general consensus seems to be that we are. The scientific community certainly believes so, and so do the numbers. In fact, certain claims, such as the one which said that volcanoes emit much more CO2 than humans, has been conclusively proved to be false and was as such removed later from the film. While natural sources do contribute, what the data says cannot be disputed. Human activities have significantly increased the amount of CO2, which has been followed by increase in average temperatures worldwide. The Inconvenient Truth reiterates the above two points rather strongly, with Gore appealing to us to do something about the situation, and fast. Again, it backs these claims with well accepted science. 5. Are there vested interests? This is a conspiracy! This is one of the major selling points of Swindle, and difficult to argue against. In fact, it might well be true. History has shown us time and again that the media and political organizations have used major events to either generate hype or to enforce policies to serve their own needs. And this one might not be very different.

What definitely is true is that man-made global warming threatens our world, and while it might well be misused and misrepresented by certain agencies, there is an urgent need to take definitive measures to combat it. It is absolutely essential, both ethically and practically. However, the theory that the scientific community is in fact promoting what is bad science seems patently false. They not only have innumerable precedents, studies and data to back this claim, but as far as the history of science goes, if something is proved conclusively to be wrong, it has not taken a long time for the community to forgo it completely and begin work on a new theory. That is how science has always worked. 6. That the developing nations are suffering due to environment policies This seems to be true. All over, it is the poor third World countries that are being forced to take implement carbon control measures, severely impacting the lives of those people living below the poverty line and unable to pay for expensive methods of power such as solar panels, windmills etc. This definitely must change, but at the same time, we must admit that global warming is a serious threat. While developing economies must definitely be protected and developed nations must take the onus on themselves as a moral duty, the fact that our implementation of the solution is faulty does not mean that the problem does not exist. It is right there, in your face. The ice caps are melting, whether you like it or not. While we should definitely take care that the African dream is not destroyed, using it as a reason to bash the theory is pretty much wrong on all counts. 8. Reception While a large portion of the viewers of this documentary voted in its favour, the scientific community met it with strong opposition. Previous studies were carried out again and the current theory came out much the stronger. Statistics shown in the movie was shown to be misrepresented or the half-truth. In fact, Channel 4, where the movie was broadcast, was found guilty of violating the honour code of being impartial while broadcasting something related to scientific fact, and of favouring controversy over accuracy. Certain scientists who’d been interviewed for the film later came out and claimed that their views were severely misrepresented.

What we must do Under the pretty much accurate assumption that we are the main culprits for global warming, there are concrete steps we must take, and fast, to combat it. Just like suggested in the movie, we should consciously behave green in our day-to-day lives. Renewable power, green cars, eco-friendly appliances, solar power are just a few of the many ways. It is also essential to spread awareness, and making everyone conscious of the very real threat of catastrophe in the case of this continuing is the need of the hour. Governments must strictly implement environment

laws, while maintaining a balance with economic growth. The onus must lie on the developed countries to lead the way here, as it is their industries that warm the Earth the most. Summary It seems evident from most of the data, studies, and scientists in the field do believe that humans are the main cause of significantly increased emission of greenhouse gases in the recent past, which in turn has led to global warming. The effects of this too seem undisputable Skeptics of the human- caused global warming, it seems to me that, do not have solid evidence to back their claims, as is always needed when you propose any new idea. They form a small minority of dissenters and while some points do make you stop and think further, on rigorous analysis, all their arguments seem to fall apart. Hence, in conclusion, I would say that humans do indeed majorly affect increase in temperature through mainly CO2 emissions, and the theory is strong enough to successfully withstand opposition. It is also clear that we must work harder than ever at a global level to come up with ideas and solutions to save our planet from a potential disaster.

Al Gore is a politician and environmentalist that gave his speech “Climate Emergency” at Yale School of Forestry in 2004. He also presented it during the presidential campaign that same year. He argues that the Earth’s environment is in fact vulnerable, and that humans have a big impact on it. In his speech he uses scientific facts, statistics, maps, and graphs to demonstrate. Gore explains why he used the title “Climate Emergency”, “it is intended to convey what it conveys- that this is a crisis with an unusual sense of urgency attached to it, and we should see it as an emergency. The fact that we don’t, or that most people don’t is part of what I want to cover here” (Gore, 861)…

The global warming debate is a very hot topic. Some believe that it is real, while others do not. Even on the side of the people who think it is a real thing there is debate. Some people think that it is a naturally occurring event while others think that it is manmade. Those who believe it is manmade think that too much carbon output is the cause. This is the stand that former vice president/presidential candidate Al Gore takes in his academy award winning documentary, An Inconvenient Truth.…

Through the research I’ve done on global warming it appears to me that there is no problem with it at all, and that there is nothing to worry about. We need to accept that fact that global warming is actually helping the human race in many different ways. For examples the environment is warming up, the ocean levels are rising, and the increase of carbon dioxide are all benefits to the environment and economy. It’s almost as if global warming is turning the earth into a tropical paradise.…

“An Inconvenient Truth” directed by Davis Guggenheim is a documentary that Al Gore stars in for the public purpose of increasing awareness about climate change due to greenhouse gases, but for the indirect political purpose of increasing Gore’s popularity amongst the educated masses. Gore’s direct audience would be the liberal thinkers and people concerned about their environment or the future of their family. He asserts that global warming is severely impacting the environment and changes need to be implemented in people’s everyday lives to reduce the negative side effects of the human race’s actions. Gore’s tactics are compelling and highly effective to the point that the documentary received many reviews, both negative and positive, along with millions of dollars in the box office.…

Al Gore states that in his documentary film An Inconvenient Truth he was only voicing his concerns for strictly moral and ethical reasons containing Global Warming. When really Al Gore’s documentary was just an additional method to help him receive another bid at presidency. Global Warming needs to be brought to the attention of everyone it is an enormous problem in our world today, and we should be finding ways to put it to an end. In the documentary film Al Gore states “It takes time to connect the dots, I know that. But I also know that there can be a day of reckoning when you wish you had connected the dots more quickly” (An Inconvenient). Throughout this documentary Al Gore helps attract the attention of many around the world to Global Warming, but throughout this video he is also still focused on winning presidency.…

An Inconvenient Truth by Al Gore, is a documentary that tells us about Global Warming. He tells us, Global Warming involves solar radiation in the form of light waves passing through the atmosphere. Most of this radiation is absorbed by the Earth and warms it. Then some of the energy is radiated back into space, by the Earth, in the form of infrared waves. However during this process, some of the outgoing infrared radiation is trapped by the Earth’s atmosphere and warms it; which in return keeps the temperature at a livable and somewhat constant level. In this documentary Al Gore uses Logos, Ethos and Pathos to argue global warming, and the terrible effects pollution can have on our planet.…

An Inconvenient Truth An Inconvenient Truth is a documentary film that was produced by former U. S. Vice President Al Gore in 2006. The film endeavors to educate people about the environmental crisis. In the presentation, Al Gore thoroughly discusses current serious environmental issues and their likely consequences. Gore’s argument is supported by fundamental theories, scientific data, and solid evidences. The movie declares that every person has the responsibility and power to save Earth. In order to accomplish this, action must be taken. Though the film reveals several trivial logical fallacies, the presentation is generally funny, compelling, engaging, and ultimately convincing. Although some critics declare that the film contains more bias than truth, Gore’s attempt to inform the public about global warming significantly promotes the value of social ethics. In the opening scene, Gore presents this thought: “You look at that river gently flowing by. You notice the leaves rustling with the wind. You hear the birds; you hear the tree frogs. In the distance you hear a cow. You feel the grass. The mud gives a little bit on the river bank. It’s quiet; it’s peaceful. And all of a sudden, it’s a gear shift inside you. And it’s like taking a deep breath and going……Oh yeah, I forgot about this.”(Gore) This monologue implies Gore’s message about climate crisis. The 80-minute-long presentation focuses on Al Gore’s travels and his endeavors to educate people about the severity of global warming and its effects. Solid scientific evidence and significant examples are used to support the argument that society’s continual ignorance and the increasing release of pollutant gases will lead to a fatal catastrophe for the planet. The primary evidence in support of this thesis is Gore’s examination of increasing temperatures and CO2 levels over the past 650,000 years. These factors could lead to several possible consequences. An Inconvenient Truth predicts the collapse of an…

This article is a very effective means of communication and persuasion based on several factors. One reason that this editorial is so effective is because Alley gives examples of the problems that humans could face in the future due to abrupt climate change and global warming. For example, Alley mentioned such issues as uncomfortable conditions for humans because of extreme heat, melting of polar ice caps, and deadly heat waves. Alley did a good job of explaining How these problems are created. To do this, he described how too much carbon dioxide released by humans acts similar to a heavy blanket on a sleeping child, overheating the Earth. Although this is a good comparison, Alley could have been more effective by informing his audience on how large amounts of carbon dioxide deplete the ozone layer, which causes global warming.…

For the last 2.5 million years, global temperature has shifted between cold glacial periods that last for around 100 000 years, and warmer interglacial periods that last for around 10 000 years. Right now we are in an interglacial period. 20 000 years ago the Earth was cold. Around 15000 years ago it started to warm up, this was the end of the last glacial period. Over the last 10 000 years the climate has been warm with minor fluctuations, however over the last 1000 years the climate has been fairly constant with small fluctuations in annual temperature. Over the last century global temperature has increased rapidly. This is called global warming; there has been a sharp rise in average temperature, 0.7oc between 1900 and 2000. The temperature increase over the last century has been very fast. There is a consensus among scientists that the changes in climate over the last century are a result in human activities (anthropogenic causes), including Al Gore, as shown in the statement which I agree with. I think the majority of global warming is due to humans therefore it is our right to try and find solutions to diminish global warming as much as we can.…

Controversy over global warming exists as a dispute regarding the nature and consequences of global warming. The theory of global warning as presented in the mainstream media currently assumes that carbon dioxide is an atmospheric greenhouse gas and since humans are producing more carbon dioxide than previously, the temperature must therefore rise. The cause of global warming is not actually known, but in it 's simplest terms the debate boils down to whether or not global warming is caused by human interference or part of a naturally occurring cycle. The debate has recently become one-sided in favor of human interference due mostly to three factors: political pressure on scientists to produce research that supports the global warming theory, public misconception of what scientific consensus is, and an irresponsible that media promotes sensationalized viewpoints to sell advertising.…
