Discuss the proposition that globalisation and European integration have eroded the sovereignty of the nation state in Europe
The essay begins by looking at the aspect of globalisation, before considering the thoughts and functionality of European integration leading to a ‘supernation’ Europe. ‘Sovereignty refers to the ultimate source of authority in society. In a modern world where international boundaries are merely geographical it is becoming increasingly difficult for nation states to protect their beliefs and cultures which in fact in the past were seen as the guidelines to how people lived their lives. Although growth is regularly recognised as a GDP figure or financial statistic it can also be in the form of progression in an individual and collectively as a large group of individuals which can represent a nation. ‘Change is inevitable.
