Globalization and Music Industry
Globalization is integration of societies, economies, cultures of worldwide through of process of technology, politic and trade. In cultural way, it basically means that where countries used to have unique culture, now all the countries are becoming similar are losing the their uniqe features. Also, it can call “world without borders.
Cultural Globalization is transforming ideas, meanings and values across to world. Cultural globalization is a long-term historical process. Religious movements are one of the biggest example of historical cultural globalization. In today’s world; movies, books, musics are part of cultural globalization.
The music industry consists of the companies and individuals that make money by creating and selling music. In today’s world a large majority of music market for recorded music is controlled by three major companies. They are; French-owned Universal, Japanese owned Sony, and the US owned Warner Music. There are still music companies but those companies mostly independent. In live music, the market’s huge piece controlled by Live Nation.

Findings
-Digital music is the biggest way to get more people in all around the world.
-Napster was the first biggest P2P service which led to get music easily
-With Napster, the people from all around the world had a chance to listen world’s music without any company. It was a good way to get over the borders.
-iTunes is a online music market from the US. iTunes also available almost all the world. iTunes is a biggest music vendor and it leads global music industry.
-Spotify is another software for music from Sweden. in Spotify there are about 20 million completely free songs to people who live in spotify-available countries.
-Globalization and this kind digital distribution is not always good for big labels. It’s biggest example is Radiohead and their seventh studio album “In Rainbows”. With internet, Radiohead distributed their album to the wolrd.

    The company researched was Universal Music Group because the music industry is ever growing and I wanted to know more about the company. As we all know, technology has been a major part of the music industry both good and bad. Technology has helped plenty of artists and hurt others. Since the introduction of the mp3 and the popularity of the IPOD device, compact disc sales have declined and more music is being released without the record company’s permission. Some may view this as a major problem to the other major record labels that distribute music globally. But some are using the mp3 to their advantage. A while ago an artist could not walk out of a studio and release a record in ten minutes. Now artists can get the music to their fans in record time and the fans can then download the song a lot faster than a drive to the local record store. Overall sales are down in the music industry, but according to sources “Universal Music Group, the biggest of the world’s four major music companies, made the most money percentage and dollar wise from digital sales in 2008 (Lewis, 2009).” Because it’s believed that music is a global language, Universal Music Group makes money from all across the world. The company has artists and labels from multiple countries that are very successful in generating record sales. There are American artists that were at a point in their careers where their music was not selling as it once was, but now they are touring overseas. Technology and globalization have been a driving force in the music industry and Universal Music Group is reaping the benefits of both. It took the major labels a long time to embrace the digital age of music and they almost missed out on major money. Universal Music Group is thriving in a declining music industry that has gone from analog to digital right before our eyes.…

Within the last decade, music has seen cardinal changes in the way both major and independent labels distribute their products. An industry that once relied on Payola 's and mass distribution of physical records and CD 's now relies heavily on the power of the internet. The first instance of mass distribution of music through the internet was by the service Ritmoteca.com in 1998 [1]. Ritmoteca had a library of over 300,000 songs, offering individual songs for 99 cents each and albums for $9.99. After signing distribution deals with many major music labels such as Warner Bros, Sony, and Universal, it was clear that the market for selling music online was opening up. The year following Ritmoteca 's inception, the peer-to-peer file sharing service named Napster opened its virtual doors to listeners across the world at the price of nothing [2]. At its peak, Napster had over 80 million users across the globe [3]. The service 's popularity sparked a great deal of controversy, as the artists whose music was being downloaded for free felt they deserved to be compensated. Naturally, dozens of lawsuits followed, resulting in Napster 's peer-to-peer file sharing system to be shut down. However, Napster was able to make somewhat of a comeback by competing in today 's ever popular music streaming industry, which allows for users to listen to music at a monthly fee or for free, all the while compensating artists.
