Gloria Steinem expresses her concerns about the balance of nature and nurture, and the outlook on society. Steinem wasn’t raised going to public school, and learned through exploring, rather than textbooks telling her about the world. She wasn’t enrolled in a public school until she was 12 years old, which was hard for her to fit in and learn all the secularities that come along with being in public school. She was scared to go to public school, because she “wasn’t prepared for gender obsessions, race and class complexities, or the new-to-me idea that war and male leadership were part of human nature”. I have seen first-hand, children that didn’t go to public school, until they were in 3rd or 4th grade, they didn’t seem too shocked, but they were different than the rest of the children. I learned that Steinem has a tremendous amount of hope for our world, but she believes it starts with the child, and people that restrict their children too much hinder their ability to become great people. In order not to have a more corrupt generation, and generations to come we must learn how to work with them and not fill their heads with too many choices, they will have their own ideas about the world. Falling into liberal ways can be harmful to you and your family, most of us like Steinem said, many of us live a mixed lifestyle because we are very indecisive. I believe living a free lifestyle like Steinem is good for people to experience in their lifetime, you will never know what it’s like until you do. Steinem refers to Earth as a space ship, whether we are launching or exploring new places, we have no Idea where the ride will take us. Finally, I agree with Steinem on the idea of “children not being blank slates on which society can write anything” we are each individual person and come with our own code of beliefs and ideas.
