During the final scene of the movie, the 54th infantry are given the task to be the front line on the charge on a confederate fort in Charles, South Carolina on July 18, 1863 where almost all of the soldiers are killed. The movie has a central theme that the African American soldiers were fighting for their own rights and that’s why they fought so hard and toughed it out during the war. Robert Gould Shaw, the commander of the regiment was shown in the movie as the first choice of Governor Andrew when according to history he wasn’t the first choice to be the commander and also hesitated the idea of leading the regiment. The regiment was shown in the movie composed of run-away slaves when in fact most of the soldiers when freeman living in the north. Colonel Shaw’s death was accurate according to history because he did with his mean but was stripped of his uniform and was later buried with the men he fought with. The basic change of the mentality toward African American’s was mostly correct due to the fact that at first they did have a very negative view to them and did respect them a little more at the end. The story line of the movie was historically accurate except the time they began training was actually about three months later than the movie shows.
