Al-asharatu mubashshirun
The ten people that were given the glad tiddings of assurance of entering paradise. They were Abu Bakr, Umar, Ali, Abdur Rahman Ibn Awf, Abu Ubaydah ibn Al-Jarrah, Talhah ibn Ubaydullah, Az-Aubayr ibn al-Awwam, Sa’d ibn Abi Waqqas, Sa’id ibn Zayd

Al-asma al-husna
Literally meaning the ‘most excellent names’ used of God, express his greatness and paramountey, holiness, and the perfection and absoluteness of all His attributes

Al-hamdu lillahi rabbil'alamin
Praise be to Allah, the lord of the worlds

Allahu akbar
Allah is the Greatest

Amir al-mumineen
Commander of the belivers, this title was given to Khalifah

Aqiqah
It is a dinner reception to be made after a child is born.

Assalamu alaikum
Peace be upon you

Assalamu alaikum Wa Rahmatullah
May the peace and the Mercy of Allah be upon you

Astaghfirullah
I ask Allah forgiveness

A'uzu billa hi minashatanir rajim
I seek refuge from Allah from the outcast Satan

Barakallah
May the blessings of Allah (be upon you)

Bid'ah

In popular usage this has come to mean heresy

Bismillahir rahmanir rahim

In the name of Allah, the most beneficent, the most merciful

Caliph literally successor; refers to the successor of the Prophet Muhammad, the ruler of an Islamic theocracy

Dajjal an Islamic figure similar to the Antichrist; means "liar" or "deceiver".

Dhikr
Remembrance for the sake of Allah

Din the way of life based on Islamic revelation; the sum total of a Muslim's faith and practice. Dīn is often used to mean the faith and religion of Islam

Eid
Mean a festivity, a celebration, a recurring happiness and a feast.

Fajr dawn, and denotes Subhe-Sadiq, the prime time for prayer

Faqih
One who has a deep understanding of Islam, its laws, and jurisprudence

Ghafara to forgive, to cover up (sins). A characteristic of God.

Ghanimah spoils of war, booty

Hadith
Reports on the sayings and the traditions of Prophet Muhammad SAW or what he withessed and approved

Hadith qudsi
A hadith which the prophet Muhammad says that Allah says so and so

Halal

Something that is lawful and permitted in islam

Haqq
The truth

Haraam

Something which is unlawfull or prohibited in Islam

Hijrah

Means migration, refers to the Prophet’s migration from Mecca to Madinah

Innalillahiwa inna ilahi raji'un
We are from Allah and to whom we are returning

Jahiliyyah

Means ignorant. Jahiliyyah refers to the pre-islamic era that existed in Arabia, it is a combination of views, ideas, and practices that totally defy and reject the guidance sent down by God through His Prophets

Jannah

The heavenly garden, paradose. The place of the faithful in the afterlife

Jazakallahu khayran
May Allah reward you for the good

Disbelief

Kalam
Literally, "words" or "speech," and referring to oration. The name applied to the discipline of philosophy and theology concerned specifically with the nature of faith, determinism and freedom, and the nature of the divine attributes

La hawla wa la quwwata illa billah
There is no power and no strength save in Allah

La ilaha illallah

There is no lord worthy of worship except Allah

Lunar calendar

In their religious duties, muslims depend on solar and lunar calendars. The latter is shorter than the solar by twelve days. Fasting the month of Ramadhan, celebrating the two major feasts, performing the pilgrimage to Makkah, and other religious activities depend upon the lunar months

Mosque

Muhammadun Rasul Allah
Muhammad is the messenger of Allah

Munafiq

A hypocrite, one whose external appearance is islam (praying, fasting, activism, etc) but whose inner reality conceals kufr – often unbeknownst to the person themselves

Mushrik

A polythiest, a person who acribes partners to Allah

Nabi literally, prophets. In the Islamic context, a Nabi is a man sent by God to give guidance to man, but not given scripture. The Prophet Abraham was a Nabi. This is in contrast to Rasul, or Messenger

Day of Judgement, resurrection

Qisas equitable retribution – a fine for murder if the heirs forgive the perpetrator

Lord, Sustainer, Cherisher, Master.

Merciful

Rukn means what is inevitable. One of the five pillars of Islam

Sadaqah
Means charity

Sahabah
Companions of the Prophet

Sallallahu'alaihi wa sallam
May the blessings and the peace of Allah be upon him (Muhammad)

Shahadah
Declaration of faith

Shaheed

A martyr, someone who dies in the way of Allah

Ta’ala
Almighty

Taharah purification from ritual impurities by means of wudu or ghusl

Takbir a proclamation of the greatness of Allah; a Muslim invocation.

Umm al-mu'mineen

Means ‘mother of the believers’. This was the title of the prophet’s wives

Wa'alaikumus salam
And upon you is the peace

Walimah

It is a dinner reception to be made after a marriage is consummated

Yaqin certainty, that which is certain

Yarhamuk Allah
"May God have mercy on you", said when someone sneezes; the same as "(God) bless you" in English

Zabur the Psalms revealed to King Daoud (David)

Zakat tax, alms, tithe as a Muslim duty; Sunnis regard this as the fourth Pillar of Islam. Neither charity nor derived from Islamic economics, but a religious duty and social obligation
