Glows And Grow
The Glows and Grows is an effective way to acknowledge the successes and challenges of a variety of systems, tasks, behaviors and completed work. The best time to introduce the Glows and Grows strategy in the media center is at the end of the third week. By the third week students will be familiar with the rules and expectations of media class and the media center. To begin we will discuss what the meaning of “Glow” and “Grow” are and I will provide examples if the students cannot. As a class we will reflect on the highlights (glows) of the previous three weeks and the things we want to improve on (grows) for the following weeks. See Glows & Grows sheet in the appendix. The sheet will be filled out on line and revisited on the whiteboard in later weeks to gauge growth. The range for the Glows and Grows can be commentary on how my classroom is structured, what works and what doesn’t and can be followed up with suggestions for changes. In addition to structure it can also be a behavior recognition activity. For my classroom, the behavior recognition piece for each student really won’t work as I do not have the time to manage individual star charts for each student in the school. Instead I would encourage students to generalize on the behavior of the class as a whole and recognize things that work and don’t work within each individual group. When we revisit the “Grow” piece in future weeks, if true growth is made, then it will be reflected on …show more content…
As a Specials teacher I often do not get much contact with parents. Using the Glow & Grow sheet (see page 2 in Appendix) will allow me to recognize the successes of each student as well as address any behavior issues early in the year. In many cases I only talk to parents for extreme behavior problems. The “Grow” piece will allow me to address all the mild behavior problems in a positive way as I will also give a “Glow” as

I provide a positive relationship with the child through daily routines and interactions allowing growth in in their development of self and others. Each morning I ensure that I greet each child and parent when they arrive. In greeting the child I will always address the child by his/her name and encourage the other children to say good morning. I feel this gives the child and parent a sense of trust and security for a safe and secure environment and this acknowledgment makes the child feel special and welcome in the class. In the mornings I also have open centers where the children can go around and greet the other student and to move and work at their own pace. I also find some way to praise the class and each child daily. I provide opportunities for the children to always feel successful and proud of themselves. All children have different rates of development and different personalities. Knowing this can help us be patient. I show children that I really care about them by accepting each child as an individual. I help children with developing social skills, Self- control, problem-solving skills, and the ability to act independently.…

Children beginning school for the first time will need to build their confidence in trusting adults they are unfamiliar with. We can help with this process by projecting a happy, warm approachable personality. Taking time for a child to speak and responding with an appropriate reply and perhaps another questions will begin a conversation and build trust. We need to praise regularly in order to continue helping them become secure and projecting positive emotions.…

The observation sheets are age banded and you are able to write the next steps to follow, so you can have the child develop in all areas. These are added to their learning journeys, here you can see if there are any causes for concern and if the child is at the expected level of development for their age.…

As a teaching assistant it is important to acknowledge different aspects of child development. Babies and children may reach significant milestones at different ages, for example some babies will learn to crawl earlier than others, which are less advanced and often require nurturing. Therefore it is important to remember that development is a holistic process and that each child is unique and will develop in their own way and at different rates. Milestones give a broad average of development for when children may expect to reach a particular stage. Some pupils stand out from others because they have reached a particular milestone ahead of or later than them. Sometimes if children’s growth patterns are very different from their peers, this can have an effect on their behaviour. If this is the case then there may need to be additional provisions made for them.…
