Specific Purpose: I want the audience or agencies to be persuaded that there has to be action taken against GMOs. Although they might sound beneficial to providing for people, we should not look in the short term but look for the long terms effects.
Background: To make it clear, I will defining what GMOs are and used in this speech. When we think of GMOs, we think of manipulative ways to change DNA in organisms using technology. This is partially correct except for the fact that we humans have been genetically modifying organisms for a long time. According to Abbie Goldbas, humans have genetically modified animals about 12,000 BCE by choosing the best features for making crops or …show more content…
As a primary producer, it has an important role on many types of ecosystems and food energy pyramids. We depend on plants for food. Think about it, we eat plants, we eat herbivores and carnivores. In history, there has been disasters involving plants known in our textbooks as the The Great Potato Famine. According to Jonny Wilkes, the great famine claimed the lives of 1 million people in Ireland (Wilkes 2014). This is just to showcase how much people can depend on a crop and this was just one country. Imagine if a similar incidence happened on a worldwide scale. According to Lulie Aslaksen and Anne Myhr, we should be careful when dealing with crops, as we could accidently modify weeds that could become invasive and become resistant to herbicides and invade other plants (Aslaksen and Myhr 2006). The invasive weeds can cause problems to habitats and would hinder the economy and possibly cause another famine if the crops are outcompeted.
Transition: Now that we are briefly informed about the problems that were dealing or going to possibly deal in the future, let’s talk about the causes of these problems.
