Goblet Script

Prior to every home football game, I find myself parading around the parking lots of the Goodman campus with the Marching 97 and my fellow cheerleaders. During this long trek, there are numerous stops, to perform shorter versions or the exhaustive full length of GRL2*. Every individual at each stop knows the words to the four-song montage as they have known the lyrics for decades. The current students of Lehigh rarely know this old tradition; however, the cheerleaders, band, and alumni sing and dance to it with spirit time after time. This tradition is not just a tradition; it is comprised of folklore within each song that refers to Lehigh past and present. Goblet is the first song that everyone hears when the band begins to play. Before coming to Lehigh many alumni tell students to relax and have fun in college when thinking of their pasts of “raising hell.” In particular, Richard Horn 82’ spoke of the night he and his friends trespassed into Taylor Stadium at 2am to play glow Frisbee. He reminisced about when the police showed up, “my friends stupidly attempted to hide from the police but ended up making too much noise in the process.” Though there was no legal action that night, there are students today who take part in the crazy party scene and end up with citations. Moreover, these students and alumni carry these stories with them and they make up the folklore of their Lehigh
It references, “When the sun goes down and the moon comes up, Lehigh will shine.” Numerous people believe at one time Lehigh must have held sporting events at night, however no one seems to know for sure where this song originated. In present day, cheerleader Dominique Voitek 20’ considers the song to mean, “Lehigh will always win at the end of the day no matter what.” Consequently, everyone sings at each tailgate with the hope that Lehigh does in fact shine into the night with a win.
