It could be because although we are “innocent until proven guilty” as soon as we are arrested we are treated as criminals. Men come out with ruined reputations with years of their life wasted and unable to provide for themselves or their loved ones. The treatment inside the prisons are as bad as the treatment outside, leaving people with psychological issues and unable to trust anyone. However, we can do better! You can never give someone their years back but they can be compensated financially and given the tools to help them start a new life. First, expunge their record, help them find jobs and have programs for these broken people to help these people psychologically. As lawyers we need to care a little more and try to do things correctly. Investigate thoroughly really be passionate and sensitive for what you do because it’s a person's life that you’re changing. What if it were you in that situation, what if you didn’t have the means to afford a lawyer and your freedom depends on the effort of a complete stranger. There can also be a program that once new technology comes out it can be used to re-run evidence to make sure that the person that says he isn’t guilty really isn’t. In order to change the issue of wrongful convictions and incarceration we need to be more humane and do our jobs correctly. Maybe care a lot more!
