The story introduces turnip cakes, congee, and a futon. It also walks the students through some of the traditions of the Chinese New Year. In the illustrations, children can see the Chinese New Year celebration taking place outside of the homes; it appears to be in the street. The story shows value for the Chinese culture while never making this culture more important than another. Diversity can be see between the Chinese New Year and the New Year that is celebrated I other cultures. Children will be enlightened and they will learn about a new culture while already knowing the basics of the story. This book helps children from other cultures to understand and accept the value and traditions of the Chinese New Year. It does this by telling of the important aspects of the celebration of the Chinese New Year. The dynamics of differences can be viewed and celebrated while reading this story; children can discuss the differences between the way that they celebrate a new year and the way Goldy Luck and Little Chan celebrate. They can also discuss the reasons that Goldy Luck may have decided to go back over to the Chans home after she ran out. The way that Little Chan reacted to Goldy Luck should also be discussed; he was very forgiving and asked her to stay and help his family make more turnip cakes. As a class, the students and teacher could decide to celebrate the Chinese New Year.
