Wal-Mart is one of the largest companies in the U.S. is Wal-Mart really what we need? Wal-Mart is a discount store that is bad for America and the economy and other smaller company that may be competition for Wal-Mart.
Wal-Mart is a big company and offers people discounts for the same products another companies may be charging higher for. So of course you would rather buy it cheaper, which now is putting the other business out of business and also people that work for other business are now out of a job. Which now leads to jobs, and how Wal-Mart also cost jobs for Americans. For example in a manufacturing business, being that they buy their product in bulk from other foreign countries most of the time it is costing us jobs here in America. Wal-Mart is also ripping Americans off on wages, they are low and the insurance they offer is not worth it. It is true that Wal-Mart also creates jobs because alone when they open they hire about 400 new people, but to me they take away jobs just about as much as they create them.
Now for a few positives, Wal-Mart is selling allot of goods in retail, which increases productivity in the retail trade. According to U.S. Department of Labor, labor productivity rose in Wal-Mart for 8 percent since 1987 to 2004. Another thing is consumer surplus. People can buy products for less then what they are paying at another store so it adds up. Discount stores appeal more to poor and middle class people. So when we attack Wal-Mart and other discount stores we are also attacking the people that work there, and shop there. Christmas time is a popular time of the year for Wal-Mart sales boost and they hire many part time people for the season. Time magazine once titled "Will Wal-Mart Steal Christmas?" I guess by meaning that they are offering toys at a discount from other stores which might steal Christmas from their workers and costumers that may have once shopped at another store that now are looking
