Throughout the story, they were many bribes towards him and even threats. For an example, the Bully threatens to shove the Good Guy in a locker, the Rich boy bribed him with money, and the cute girl used her cute looks as an advantage. There were so many opportunities for the Good Guy to easily ditch what was right but instead he handed the answers back to the teacher with much pride. In the act of handing back the answers to the teacher she says, “That is why I am recommending you for admission to COLLEGE!” This shows how the Good Guy made the right decision because, in the end the he gets the biggest reward of all reaching his goal in going to college. As one can see, even though it might be stressful to make a decision something can go good for you if you make the good

In Cohen's essay the last line is “I was too proud to thank Mr. Salzman for all he had done." This shows that Cohen appreciated everything Mr. Salzman had done for his education even though he was too prideful to admit it. Mr. Salzman also reminded him of his father, articulate and blunt. This seemed to play a part in Cohen not giving his best in class. Despite this, Mr. Salzman made the effort to see that he did well in his class. With this support, Cohen continued to aim higher on his schooling. He shows himself putting more exertion towards school than his fellow classmates. The insight Cohen expressed about education in his essay is that once hard work is applied to school everything becomes less of a hassle. He tells the reader this at…

Marcus Mabry came from a poor family but worked hard to make into Stanford which contrasts heavily with his family’s suffering. Mabry describes his two very different lives between the poverty he and his family endured living in New Jersey and his newfound life at Stanford University. Marcus Mabry paints the differences of his two worlds to the reader in more than one way. First, he explains the economical differences between the two geographical areas, he describes his hometown as the slums or a place where people go to survive, not to live. In contrast, Stanford is a place of freedom and being worry free, where the world is perfect and there is no such thing as poverty, but Mabry gets a reality check every time he visits his family in New Jersey. He feels responsible for his family and wishes there was something he could do to help them. The fact that Mabry has encountered these life situations make him very proud of his accomplishments “Somewhere in the midst of all that misery, my family has built, within me, a “proud feeling.” Mabry followed his heart and put his education at a high priority in his life. Seeing the conditions his family was living in sparked a fire within him to do better and become someone. He knew that if he tried that he would succeed and make his whole family proud. Yet not only is he proud of himself, he is proud of his family for not giving up and breaking down even though they have every right to “As I travel between the two worlds it becomes harder to remember just how proud I should be – not just of where I have come from and where I am going, but because of where they are. The fact that they survive in the world in which they live is something to be very proud of, indeed” Although he may not be the typical student at Stanford, he knows that he comes from a strong family that support his decisions. He wants nothing more than to give what he can to his family and hates seeing them…

Rose’s parents were Italian immigrants who were both poorly educated. He grew up in South Los Angeles, which is an area characterized by its poverty. As a result of his upbringing, Rose’s top priorities did not include academics. Though he managed to float through highschool unchallenged, Rose was not prepared for the demand of college level courses. When his grades began to dip below a C average, Rose knew that he would need help from his professors outside of class. Because of his educational background, Mike Rose was hesitant to visit the faculty for extra help for fear they would view him as “stupid” (11). He soon learned that his teachers encouraged him to seek out help even though it was initially daunting. If Rose did not want to struggle through college with below average grades, he knew that it would be in his best interest to take them up on their offer for help.…

“Sweet Charity,” directed by Miriam Mills, had its first showing. “Sweet Charity” is a play that is conceived, staged, and choreographed by Bob Fosse. The play is about a woman named Charity who works as a hostess at a dance hall called The Fandango Ballroom. Charity is first seen as she is pushed into a lake by her boyfriend. She talks to her friends, Helene and Nickie, at her work about her boy troubles. We see Charity next meet a famous actor, Vittorio Vidal, who after getting into a fight with his girlfriend takes Charity out to dinner and dancing and then later back to his apartment after she faints. She tells her friends about she had been with Vittorio the night before which prompts the girls to have a discussion about wanting to do more with their lives. Charity then attends (or tries to) a seminar at the local YMCA where she meets her love interest, Oscar. We see them as good for one another until at the end of the play where she ends up in the lake again, but then she is okay with wanting to still make a better life for herself. Through all of this the playwright’s point is to show that no matter what your situation in life is, if you have a good outlook on life you can make a better life for yourself, and that you do not always need to rely on a man to make you happy.…

Marston had a son and daughter with Holloway and two sons with Byrne. Because of their unusual and unaccepted polyamorous relationship, they kept the true nature of Marston’s relationship with Byrne a closely guarded secret from everyone, including their own sons (79-181). It was not until 1963 that Holloway admitted to Byrne’s sons that Marston was their father. These lies highlighted relationship issues such as a lack of respect and, ultimately, neglect for the children. The parallels I could draw to Julia and her mother were shockingly accurate to the themes found in the aforementioned text. Ever since she was young, Julia’s mother has failed to care for her properly and has even become violent at times, which is an extreme form of…
