Goodpasture syndrome is an autoimmune disorder characterized by autoantibodies directed against the glomerular/alveolar basement membrane. These autoantibodies bind to their reactive epitopes in the basement membranes and activate the complement cascade, resulting in tissue injury.
The basement membranes are complex structures that support layers of endothelium and epithelium. It is made up of of type IV collagen, laminin and proteoglycans.
In Good Pasteurs disease the immune system wrongly recognizes these cells as foreign and attacks and destroys them, as it would to an invading pathogen. There is a combination of glomerulonephritis with alveolar hemorrhage and anti-GBM antibodies. Anti-GBM antibodies
