Goodwill Industries Oklahoma
The first Goodwill was founded in 1902 by Rev Edgar Helms. He trained and employed individuals who were underprivileged and immigrants to repair used goods from the wealth family. The three sources of revenue were the retails stores, secondary sales and contract services. In 2009, two out of the OGI’s twelve Goodwill retail shops had been closed down, they were replace by three donation centers. This caused reduction of OGI’s market place from 20% in 2007 to 15%. OGI also had made some significant investment in capital, spread among only ten retail stores. They designed a five year plan to increase the revenue and donations.
The main issues for OGI were supply and demand planning, getting logistics management under control, forecasting inventory volumes and sales across product categories is very difficult. Some options to improve low visibility of donations, OGI can put seasonal stands in supermarkets that receive donations. They can put convenient donation boxes at several locations. Also invest in marketing campaigns. Second issue, the trucks owned by OGI are running only at 73% of their capacity. Some opportunities for this issue are that they sell the truck A (which is the only one that is running at low capacity) and allocate the home pick-ups between trucks B and C. In high seasons when their capacity is overpassed they can outsource the transport during those periods of time. For Supply uncertainty, OGI should purchase a bar coding system with the revenues of the selling of the truck A, with this system they can make some forecasts by product according to historical information. They would also need a strong marketing department, so they can distinguish between products that are most in need can be more incentivized through marketing campaigns in order to motivate and inform people to donate these products. As a non – profit organization that relies on donations for its running it is almost impossible to have a full control over the forecasts of the

Addressing the funding of nonprofits in today’s environment requires creativity. Government funding cuts play a major role in a non-profits currently surviving on a safety net established with the Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (Senior Homes). Nonprofits also often receive state funds; with the recent economic downturn the groups receiving state support are receiving less funding and the money sent is often in the rears. As state and federal budget cuts loom, resources for nonprofits must rely on the private sector for funding and support. From 1999 to 2009 there was a 31% increase in nonprofit organizations according to the latest data (Charitable Statistics). With this increase in nonprofit organizations, there is a more competitive market for the allotted monies from both public and private resources which cause straining in the market. Organizations must think outside the box to pursue fundraising and awareness to their cause and campaign to differentiate themselves from those with similar missions in such a competitive market. Streamlining data and administrative processes are underway with many nonprofits. Not possessing the funding to develop a digital presence can also cause funding to move slowly since online marketing is a way to raise awareness and attention to potential funding sources.…

Company Q, a small local grocery store chain, has recently closed two stores. These stores were located in a high-crime area and the company reported that they consistently lost money. The area’s food bank requested that Company Q donate day-old merchandise, which management denied. JC Penney was once a fashion icon to children, young adults, and teens. Beginning in 1913 it currently operates over 1000 stores. Growing up my sister and I waited to go through their catalogue. We would circle everything we wanted. We would even get our hair cut the same way some of their models did. I went as far as crimping my hair because the model had her hair crimped. Every summer before school started my Grandma would take us shopping at Penney’s for new school clothes. This company is near and dear to my heart. However, even though it has been operating for 100 years it has started failing.…

When food-bank drives are conducted, people generously donate items such as canned beans and boxed cereal but don’t often don’t think about baby supplies, leaving the banks often unable to help families with food, diapers, and other things for their babies. To meet this need, the UCBCC conducts a drive the second Saturday of each May and September to gather baby supplies. Typically, these drives are held in large supermarkets that have given permission to UCBCC to set up a table near the front of the store and as customers come in, invite them to purchase a baby item or two while they are shopping to donate to the food bank or to contribute money. As the customers leave, they drop off the purchased items at the donation table.…

The greatest potential benefit of nonprofit groups operating like businesses is operational efficiency and less dependency on public funding. As described in the case study, “Blurring the Line Between Profits and Nonprofits,” when Michael Miller became President of Portland Goodwill in the mid-1980s, he adopted a corporate approach to running the charity that increased total sales tenfold (Johnson, 2007, p. xxiii). By adopting business best practices, this nonprofit group became very successful and was able to reduce its reliance on government funding.…
