Thesis: Even though some people think public humiliation is an effective form of punishment, wrongful accusations can lead to death and bad reputations of innocent people.
Intro
All around the world people are being unfairly punished by public humiliation.
“It has always been a mystery to me how men can feel themselves honored by the humiliation of their fellow beings” (Gandhi).
Even though some people think public humiliation is an effective form of punishment, wrongful accusations can lead to death and bad reputations of innocent people.
Body paragraph 1
When punishing a person for a crime there is always a chance the person was wrongfully accused.
The Crucible shows wrongful accusation when Tituba wrongfully accuses …show more content…
others in the town. “He say Mr.
Parris must be kill! He bid me rise out of my bed and cut your throat! They gasp . But I tell him “No! I don’t hate that man, I don’t want to kill that man.” And then he come one stormy night to me and he say, “Look! I have WHITE people belong to me.” And I look – and there was Goody Good” (Miller,
Tituba is accusing Goody Good of witchcraft. Although Goody good was not really a witch, Tituba accuses her in order to save her own life.
The selfish act of Tituba is a perfect example as to why public humiliation is not an effective or fair punishment.
Body Paragraph 2
Public Humiliation can lead to things such as death, which is a punishment that most of the time is too extreme.
“Nurse Jacintha Saldanha committed suicide after being publicly humiliated for violating the royal familys privacy. The Further Adventures of Will and Kate, that popular long-running entertainment, took an extremely dark turn last week when Jacintha Saldanha, a nurse involved in Kate’s care at the King Edward VII Hospital, committed suicide after being sucked in by a sophomoric ruse” (The Daily Beast).
Jacintha’s suicide is a perfect example for why public humiliation is wrong. She could not live with the guilt and knowing everyone around the world knew of her mistake.
Unnecessary suicide is a prime example of why public humiliation is not an effective
punishment.
Body Paragraph 3
Some people believe that public humiliation is not always taken to such extreme issues and can help a criminal learn a lesson.
“Human beings are deeply social, and the threat of public embarrassment does prevent all sorts of bad behavior. But I don't think deliberately setting up humiliating situations, such as hanging a sign around someone's neck, or putting them in stocks, is a way to motivate them to good behavior. It also seems kind of uncivilized, childish really” (Hubpages, graceomally).
As blogger graceomally says publicly humiliating someone is not a way to motivate some to change their behavior, its cruel. People have to want to change and fix what they have done wrong. Not be forced into it by humiliation.
Conclusion
Even though some people think public humiliation is an effective form of punishment, wrongful accusations can lead to death and bad reputations of innocent people. public humiliation causes many people in today’s world to cause harm to themselves and or ruin a reputation that has no means being ruined.
By going against public humiliation you could help save someone’s life who deserves it just as much as you do.
