Gosford Park

Summary
The movie Gosford Park is a story that takes place in an old rich English country house in the 1930’s.
Sir William McCordle and his wife Lady Sylvia is a pair of wealthy British socialites. They have their big house, a complete staff, a butler and everything that an upper class English family would have.
One weekend they invite their friends and family up for a weekend shooting party. All the guests are also wealthy and some even bring their own maids. Among the guests we have Sylvia’s sister and her husband, Lord and Lady Stockbridge, film star Ivor Novello and an American Hollywood producer Morris Weissman, Sylvias aunt, Anthony Meredith, and a variety of other business associates.
Downstairs we have all the servants: the butler Jennings, Mrs. Croft, Mary, George, Arthur, Probert, Parks, and many others. The servants are expected to do as they are told and not to comment on anything.
The movie shows the lives of the English upper class, and how the servants have a totally different life just downstairs. When Sir William, the man of the house, gets murdered, everyone is to suspect. At first, it appears that he was stabbed, but when the police announce that he died of poisoning, two people must have tried to kill him at almost the same time. Every person in the movie has secrets, and as the weekend goes on, many of the secrets are revealed. And in the end we find out who the murderer is.

Analysis of the movie
The movie maintains many different themes and problems that all plays out in the large British country house. The setting is a typical upper-class house in the 1930’s in England.
The movie is a crime story. The “upstairs” “downstairs” way of life is what the whole story centers around. The movie gives us insight in both ways of life. The servants always seem to be present when the nobles discuss their secrets and problems. This way gossip is distributed to the servants and it becomes the main topic downstairs. Every

The film is set in a modern day city where violence occurs regularly. In the opening scene, a television screen is in view and a news reporter is talking. This immediately allows people to realise the time period which the film is set in. Then there is a sequence of scenes which includes shots of scenery, people fighting, newspaper articles and loud string music is played in the background. There is a lot of editing and cutting in this sequence which makes it move very fast. The next scene is where the Montague gang is at the petrol station. Loud upbeat music is played in the background. The loud music and bright coloured costumes represent the life of this city. The use of guns and convertible cars contribute to the contemporary atmosphere. The film techniques include using a handheld camera which creates a "realistic" effect. This is used in the sequence of different shots where there is fire and helicopters and guns. The reason why it is so realistic is because the quality of the shot and the way it is presented make it seem like something that would be seen on the news. But the words that appear between the shots,…

First off we see the life of the higher, ruling class, called the Wives. This is shown by the description of Serena Joy. Serena Joy is wearing a long powder blue robe, blue being the colour of royalty. Next we see that she has an ivory head on her cane and the large diamonds on her finger. This shows that she is part of the rich, upper class as ivory is a hot commodity and shows wealth. Next we are told of a fingernail that is filed to a gentle curving point. This shows that she is wealthy as she can afford manicures and that she is able to make herself and her body look better. Next we see that Serena Joy is knitting and that she has flowers, both of which are hobbies that show she lives freely and can do things for fun. Next we see the ivory coloured lighter, again showing wealth and her being a higher class, and her smoking a cigarette. Also when Serena’s lips are described as ones “you used to see in advertisements for lip cosmetics” which means that she is able to make herself look better and even boast about their looks. Finally she is being called ma’am by the lower Handmaid showing that she is of a higher status and that she earns more respect. These are some of the things that the upper-class people can do in…

There is also an interesting point when Mr. Birling talks openly of Gerald and Sheila’s social divide, “Your mother…feels you might have done better for yourself socially [than Sheila]”. This shows that the Birlings and the Crofts, both rich families, opinion that social class is everything and cannot be overlooked. Overall, the evening is almost entirely focused on society itself and how to ‘properly’ act in it.…

The age of Imperial Encounters marked a time period where cultures were connected and new perspectives were formed through exploration. No other explorer in this period of time caught the attention of the public as much as Mungo Park. Park’s travels represented not only exploration, but also imperialistic adventures, which he portrayed through his famed books and created a new perspective of the interior of Africa. Park, after growing up to be a physician, made two voyages to the interior of Africa where his experiences and encounters are well documented within his journals. Mungo Park’s adventures changed the view of African geography as well as commercial perspectives. His encounters, which led to his ultimate death, are still studied and relevant in modern culture.…
