In literary works like “The Black Cat” by Edgar Allan Poe, “The Devil and Tom Walker” by Washington Irving, and “Prey” y Richard Matheson, gothic elements are displayed in the form of: violence, death, blood, and supernatural to show how despicable and unreal scenarios can lead people into a dangerous path. Violence can be described as the use of physical force as to injure, abuse or damage someone or something. In “The Black Cat” , vengeful acts are displayed as extremely violent and insane acts. In the “Prey” violence is displayed as well, Amelia had bought a doll for her boyfriend. This doll was demonic and when the spirit of the doll was awakened Amelia was horribly attacked by the doll to the point where “ both legs were streaked with caking blood” ( Matheson 6), however she did manage to destroy the doll even though the doll was so aggressive and was displaying a noxious amount of violence. In the interlude and the eleventh chapter of Thomas C. Foster’s How to Read Literature Like a Professor, Foster analyzes the different effects violence has in literature. Firstly, Foster distinguishes that there are two different types of violence in literature. The first form of violence is when a specific injury is brought upon a character by themselves or another character through “shootings, stabbings, garrotings, drownings, poisonings, bludgeonings, bombings” and other harmful means (96). Contrasting with this, the second kind of violence is general harm brought forth by the all-powerful author. The author does this in order to advance the plot or thematically develop the story. The greatest distinction between the two violences is, “no…

Until one day i just decided “Well I’ve had enough of this picking.”’ After that, Kuklinski proceed to fight back with the metal bar. Of course, some violence is unavoidable and simply the production of a mistake, as seen in Kinkade’s poem “Boots, Sugar”. In the poem a father mistakenly shoots his daughter while cleaning his gun as the other daughter watches the scene unfold. Hardman exclaims that “The all-day every-day level is where the seeds of violence are planted and the appropriateness of war is taught.” This claim about are language makes the next scene in Kinkade’s poem understandable. At the age of seven, the first “violent” act involves her father coming home from work and immediately harping on her brother. To the young girl, this appears as extremely violent, yet in reality it was simply a father getting far too angry at an act that his son did. However, this scene displays the subjectivity of violence. In reality it was only aggressive, not directly violent. Yet to someone who is not as mature, or who has not been exposed to this type of behavior before, they might take it to be extremely violent. Her father yelling is the violent act, so…

Every day people are often seen committing good, kind, and helpful acts while others are found committing acts of evil. One doesn't think, though, of the possibility that those who often do good would rash out in evil acts for no apparent reason at all. It is human nature to simply go along in every day life, knowing right from wrong, knowing the results and consequences of certain acts, and assuming anyone with a different idea is insane. In The Child by Tiger by Thomas Wolfe, a lesson about man's darker side is taught through explorations of imagery, death, and human behavior. By means of these explorations, the reader can then see how humans are capable of losing touch with reality, taking light of killing, and releasing the evil which lies deep within.…

In “The Black Cat” by Edgar Allan Poe, the narrator acts violently towards his cat for no particular reason. Although the narrator doesn’t state why, he always seems to be drawn to the cat’s eye in a negative way. The first incident in which the narrator abuses the cat is when it doesn’t react to his rage and looks into his eyes without fear. The narrator is extremely disturbed by the cat’s presence and deliberately tries to cut out its eye. “I fancied that the cat avoided my presence…I took from my waist-coat…

The narrators madness is ultimately conveyed through his unrealistic rational to kill the old man because of his opposition toward his eye. Similarly, another one of Poe’s stories, The Black Cat, lacks logic and reason, conveying the narrator’s madness, where the narrator kills his cat that he claims to love. In both the stories, the narrators commit atrocious crimes towards objects they love, without a normal motive to do so. As they both try to convince the reader of their sanity, they are ultimately conveyed as mad due to their lack of logic and…

Why are people tempted to do things they are not suppose to do? How do you let a problem go far beyond your reach to solve? Would you let it get to the point where the problem is bigger than you? In “The Black Cat” Edgar Allan Poe writes a story to teach people a lesson. Poe begins the story by introducing the nameless character in his prison cell who retells his story with all the horrible sins he had committed. The nameless narrator makes horrible decisions by giving into his perverseness. Perverseness is when a person does something they know that they should not do but still do. He first gives into his perverse self and cuts Pluto’s eye out, his black cat. Later in the story, he kills the cat by hanging it on a tree because he felt guilty of his actions. He then replaces Pluto, but ends up trying to kill the cat. Unfortunately, as he tries to kill the cat his wife interferes and he kills her instead. At the end of the story the narrator hides his wife’s body in the cellar wall. Four days later the cops come to his house to inspect, they searched his house then his cellar wall fell and exposed his dead wife’s body. He then is sentenced to be hanged. Poe uses symbolism, similes, and irony to convey that a person should be careful of their perverseness because if…

There are things in life worth living for, and there are things in life worth dying for. Money was one of those things in the 1920s. During this time period, most Americans were “eager to enjoy the good life”, to reap “all the benefits of the American economy” (Feinberg 21). It was because of this chase for extravagance and luxury at its highest forms, however, that led to the demise of the US economy. With this in mind, the Great Depression influenced the 1930s by setting the international socioeconomic foundations for decades to come.…

In Edgar Allan Poe 's "The Murders in the Rue Morgue", a crucial statement is declared about how he views the inner workings of men, as well as how men interact with women in society. The narrative is based around the horrific murder of two defenseless women, which seems to have been committed by a mystery "beast". Poe demonstrates the primitive violent forces that exist within people, particularly men, which have the ability to escape in shocking ways, often against a woman. Poe uses violence as a negative, inhumane act, in order to reinforce the innate brutal impulses that are just under the surface of all male beings.…
