Gottschall's The Storytelling Animal
The Preface is another way of introducing the introduction. This is where he states his argument as well, "The Storytelling Animal is about the way explorers from the sciences and humanities are using new tools, new ways of thinking, to open up the vast terra incognito of Neverland. It's about the way that stories from TV commercials to daydreams to the burlesque spectacle of professionals wrestling saturate our lives"(Gottschall xvii). How stories make us human. We tell stories in all types of ways. Everything we see, hear, feel and experience is a story. Weather its fiction, non-fiction, in a daydream, or in nightmares. This helps us understand the conflicts in our lives and to be prepared if one day it came to reality. It opens up with a …show more content…
2,000 per day, we daydream and each one is about fourteen seconds. We can daydream during the things we do everyday such as, doing homework, listening to someone talk, walking somewhere, or getting dressed early in the morning. Towards the end, Gottschall was comparing imagination to reality. He thinks humans don't need to tell stories to survive. All you need is to eat and sleep. He thinks it is a waste of energy. We tell stories all the time; our brains are always telling us stories even when we are sleeping. The whole world has it’s own story. Stories aren’t just important to understanding the world; they are how we understand every bit of the world. Stories are everywhere, from children’s point of view to adult’s point of view. “Human minds yield helplessly to the suction of story. No matter how hard we concentrate, no matter how deep we dig in our heels, we just can’t resist the gravity of alternate worlds” (Gottschall 4). Building up stories can help us a lot throughout life. It can help decide the big dilemmas, or organize the chaos in our lives. Researchers say we dream all night and keep dreaming when we wake. Storytellers can get us into trouble, always adding and changing

Stories give us in the modern day a glance of how things were in a time long ago. They tell of good and bad, have no filter, and are the closest we'll get to time travel. In days when everything is in constant change, it’s nice to have something that will stay the same. We get a glimpse into the past from the stories The Book Thief and The Help. Though they are different stories, they all teach us about the life and struggles of someone from their respective times.…

Thomas Hardy believes that stories are written to tell an account of an important event whether it is personal or secular. He states that we look to books to find something greater than ourselves, we seek knowledge. If there is anything that is in the least bit more extraordinary than our own mediocre lives, we seek it. If a story does not include any unique phenomena it is considered unnecessary. “A story must be exceptional enough to justify its telling; it must have something more unusual to relate than the ordinary experience of every average man and woman.” I support this statement given the fact that most people read and listen to stories that have certain remarkable element for their own pleasure.…

Good stories are able to convey thought-provoking ideas about the world in which we live and explore. Works of fiction provide us knowledge and wisdom that help us through hardships and sufferings. Stories with strong characterisation allow us to relate with the personal and interpersonal conflicts, and feel a deep empathy and sympathy with their circumstances which may resemble our own. Tim Winton’s short stories “Big World” and “Long, Clear view” are great examples of what a ‘good story’ is. (About long velar view) Similarly, “Big World” presents a simple story about the main character’s journey which represents the themes of changing the course of one’s life to experience a new world and a brighter future. It is about the coming-of-age and…

There are at least 2 sides to every story, often 3, 4, 5 or more. Consider politics today with the upcoming elections and how each candidate that is running usually only wants to present the story that supports their position. Stories can overcome this by presenting different perspectives from various viewpoints to try and get the whole picture and not just what the writer believes.…

Roger Rosenblatt says “we are a narrative species, we exist by storytelling – by relating our situations – and the test of our evolution may lie in getting the story right.” It is basic human nature to tell stories, we write in the hopes that someone will read it and find a way to connect with it. Storytelling is therapy, when writing there is always someone who can listen to the story you have to tell. Whether it be a black chamber of a submarine or a piece of paper tucked in the bullet hole of a wall.…
