There are clear signs of needs that this program can offer solutions to in specific schools. One of the principals participating in the movement explains that most of the children are enveloped in a “97% poverty rate, majority are from the Dominican Republic, and live in single-parent homes.” Therefore, they do not have a lot of social or financial advantage. The…
Given that the target population for the program would identify as first-generation Latino male undergraduate transfers and freshman among those organizations with which LEALES would expect to work closely are: the Cross-Cultural Center (CCC), and LARC. Although it may be anticipated that LEALES will work with many more additional organization, the organizations listed previously are those which offer services which seem especially appropriate for the LEALES population. Given that the target population is so specific; serving first-generation Latino males, perhaps the LEALES program might best be housed under the CCC. The CCC for example offers various programs for multicultural leadership development which could be helpful for the Latino males that make up the LEALES program. The CCC is currently going through changes in the department but it might be expected that LEALES would work closely with the director of the program. Currently the Darlene Esparza is the interim director for the CCC. LEALES could work with the director to come up with ways in which Latino culture could be promoted and better understood throughout the campus. The other organization with which LEALES would partner up with would be LARC. LARC stands for Learning and Academic Resource Center; the center offers students students different workshops on a variety of topics from study strategies to test taking. It also offers tutorial programs lead by student facilitators for certain classes. These types of services might be of special interest to the LEALES members considering that Latino students because of their racial and socio-economic background tend to come largely from under-resourced, understaffed, underperforming, and inadequately funded schools. (Saenz & Ponjuan, 2009) This often means that the teachers at the schools were…
Our scholarship program has been an important part of our conference since the very beginning. We are proud to say that we’ve awarded over $400,000 to deserving Latino high school graduates. The support of our sponsors allows us to continue rewarding the achievements of our Latino youth.…
The LA can support the schools and encourage them to have links with the local community…
Being involved with Project 18 has impacted both the high school and the community throughout the last year. Project 18 also known as Political Action in which students volunteer for the community as well as candidates during the upcoming elections. I have volunteer to help numerous candidates in many ways such as door knockings and setting up signs. Our school annually has a THON that I have attended and been a part of to positively affect the high school as well as numerous foundations. When elections come around I have went around with fellow classmates to get people who are 18 or will be before the election to register to vote. Helping people register gets the communities numbers of voters up, in a time where numbers are down. Drugs are…
I am interning at Barrio Logan College institute (BLCI). BLCI is a non-profit organization whose mission to help children from the community who are predominantly Latinos, to become the first in their families to attend college. They serve students starting in 3rd grade through graduating high school seniors. BLCI provides academic assistance such as tutoring, college preparatory classes and one-one-one counseling. Additionally, BLCI also believes that helping the parents of their students is important; therefore in 2011 the parent program was instated with the goal of encouraging parents to become more involved in their children’s education. As an alumnus of BLCI, I decided that my internship would be a great opportunity for me to help parents…
A few blocks off the highway is a “home” called the Caroline House. Children and adults come daily to learn, play, and have a safe haven. With the National Charity League we are given the opportunity to help teach elementary and middle school students. Over the summer I chose to tutor at the Caroline House. Seeing the kids show up at 9 o’clock each and every day ready to learn made me very proud to see young students with such a…
While working for the Columbus Foundation Fellowship, my goal is to absorb as much knowledge as possible. I am confident I will learn how to interact with external stakeholders, donars and all individuals in regards to showing how their nonprofit is making an impact. This will teach me how to take an organization’s message and not only spread it among citizens, but instill a sense of urgency for their issues. I am also confident I will learn how to accept and internalize any professional feedback given to me. My passion lies with advocating for those voiceless citizens attempting to better themselves through education. I hope to one-day advocate for low-income students because they do not always received equal opportunities as others in education.…
In order to apply for National Spanish Honors Society (NSHS) last year, I was required to compile several service hours in which I had to help others through Spanish. I decided to tutor my fellow classmates and even teach them some concepts they were very unsure about. Through tutoring for several weeks I was able to attain all of my minutes but I was also able to help others understand the language better. I am also in the process of applying this year for NSHS, and I plan on tutoring and volunteering once more.…
In my undergraduate years, I volunteered for Medlife. This club runs a healthcare facility project in Peru which wanted to install medical camps for deprived districts. This was difficult since we did not have sufficient funds. I suggested to organize fundraisers at the university and resourcefully send volunteer teams to construct mobile clinics…
For community outreach I would reach out to other Mexican immigrant families in Chester County who have not used La Comunidad Hispana services. According to Barron and Taylor (2010),…
The students that go to high school in the state of Florida have to reach a bare minimum of seventy five hours in community service in order to graduate. As most student will say getting the community service hours is hard, however having the students be able to go and help the immigrants for community service is a good thing. Furthermore many students will look at it as a good way to get the hours without having to search for a ton of different and odd jobs. High school students can help the immigrants make food, grow food in a garden, and older high school students can even watch the kids who aren’t old enough to go to school. This is a great way to get high school students involved in the community and get school work done at the same…
Spelman College’s motto, A Choice to Change the World, mirrors my goal as a member of this intellectual community. During my first year at this institution, I dedicated myself to several hours of community service. I found that this was a vital part of my intellectual growth as both a student and person within society. This year I volunteered for several nonprofit organizations, however I dedicated most of my time to the Atlanta Community Food Bank. Before volunteering for this organization I was not quite sure how I would be able to make a significant difference in my community. However, when I volunteered for this organization, I was able to tremendously help people in Atlanta. Likewise, this experience opened my eyes to the increasing…
The organisation I work for is called the Community Involvement project (CIP).We deal with all communities who need interpreting services, guidance to other services such as benefit applications and where to go for education studies. We also have workshops and hold events for health awareness for cancer, diabetes, strokes and heart attack. We have started to include the deaf community as well.…
Because Fort Bend County is one of the most diverse counties in the US, I have been exposed to many other cultures and languages as well. I am part of the Global Studies Academy which allows me to express my culture and my interest in foreign foods, languages, dances, clothes. To give back to my community I am involved in the Peer Assistance and Leadership program where I have the opportunity to work with elementary kids and special ed students. This has inspired me to reach for my goal of becoming a pediatrician.…
