On this week’s episode of “GPS”, Fareed Zakaria interviewed a variety of guests to contribute on the issues of Saudi Arabia and the oil economy. He first spoke to Tony Blair, the former prime minister of the United Kingdom about the death of King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia. I found Blair to be the most interesting guest because of his personal opinion and experience with King Abdullah, and he described the king’s attitude in describing a country that in some ways is a very conservative country. Blair stated that Abdullah said that they were doing the change, but wanted to let the Saudis do it at their own pace. He also mentioned how he always have a debate as to whether Saudi Arabia should accelerate or and go faster and so on. In the end, Blair said that he believed that what Abdullah was really trying to do, was to create these vehicles of change in the country. Blair’s statement on using Saudi Aramco, the oil company, was that it is not run like many oil companies around the world but still actually is a really top well-run company. The university he established, the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology, featured men and women being treated equally and educated equally. Blair believes that the term science and technology was chosen for a reason, and claims that Abdullah’s view would be that he was moving as fast as he could. This rather favorable opinion of Saudi Arabia, a controversial country and oil power was very informative and helped create an interesting conversation. Another one of Fareed’s featured guests was Martin Wolf, who spoke about the oil economy. As an economist, Wolf believes that in the current oil situation, the Saudis have another possible choice, which is for them is to start cutting production. Wolf claims that this might raise oil prices, but he believes that they would then bear a disproportional part of the losses. It would depend on how they think that would affect other country's output and what they think the…

The two party system sometimes affects voting turnout. A state is usually considered a Democratic, Republic, or swing State. Some people think that their vote doesn’t matter because if their states is Democratic (or Republic) then the Democratic (or Republican) candidate will receive their state’s electoral votes. This results to only 45% of eligible voters actually voting.…

The amendment was one of the last legal vestiges of segregation that tried to keep the black population and the poor people from participating in the vote. As today, the 24th Amendment to the Constitution guarantees that no person can be denied the right to vote due to an inability to pay a tax prior to voting. The "poll tax" is now considered unconstitutional. The poll tax was levied on an individual used as a prerequisite for voting. Poll taxes are the same for all persons subject to them, regardless of their income, property or other taxes paid.…

An issue that matters to me is the stopping of gun violence. Some facts I found is that people can buy guns at gun shows without background checks in 33 states. The gun lobby, led by the NRA, has given over $21 million to Congress since 1990 through the sales of firearms. An important one is that every 20 minutes, a person dies from gun violence in America. If guns weren’t so easy to access it would be a lot harder for these incidents to happen.…

In order to vote in Texas, a person must be registered to vote. The registration process has been improved throughout the years after the reconstruction period. The current system is fair and is in compliance with the United States Constitution, specifically, the Fourteenth Amendment. The registration process in Texas does more than just allow a citizen to exercise their rights, it allows for the state do determine actual voter turnout compared to registered voters. Although it really does very little in determining the actual reason why a person decided to not show up on Election Day or to cast a ballot early.…

    Essay On Voter Turnout

    • 537 Words
    • 3 Pages

Voter turnout has two different ways that it can be measured, which are: the percentage of registered voters voting or the percentage of the voting-age population voting. The most commonly used is the voting-age population since it streamlines variation in different state voting requirements and elections that have an effect on voter turnout. Historically, the participation of voters had been lower than the national average in Texas. Among the factors that can influence voter turnout are: the time of election, how important the election is perceived, even the day of the week can affect voter turnout.…
