Governments Involved In The Korean War
Why did different governments get involved? What were they fighting for?

The Korean War was a war between North and South Korea, which involved a lot of International support on both sides. Where the United Nations force led by the United Sates of America fought for the South, and China and the Soviet Union fought for the North. What started out as a civil war between the North and South soon became a global contest between the superpowers of America and the Soviet Union being the first battle of the Cold War. In June 1950 Kim II Sung started its invasion of the thirty eight parallel with great military support from the Soviet Union, the thirty eights parallel was a division of Korea after World War 2 agreed by the United States and the

General McArthur, was over command of American and United Nation forces, after a heavy debate in the United States of wether to cross the 38th parallel the United States decided to push the North Koreans int the North. When this happened North Korean representatives travelled to Beijing and asked the Chinese for help. China not wanting to interfere the Korean war, world wide announced that if the United States of America crossed the 38th Parallel they would intervene. Confident People in the Us department didn’t believe the threat of the Chinese and ordered to continue pushing the North Koreans into the North towards the Yalu River. What America didn’t know was that on the other side of the Yalu River there were four armies and three artillery divisions waiting for attack. After a meeting in Moscow with the Chinese and North Koreans they told them that they wouldn't be able to directly join the war because of the UN security Resolution 84 they were part of. But the Soviets offered the Chinese sufficient military equipment. Now the americans were aware of the military appearance of the Chinese behind the Yalu River. The americans thought that because of the war in Korea the military appearance from china on the Yalu river was to protect their hydroelectric generating plants. The Korean war began when the communist North Korea started invading the South with the hope to concur the South and make the whole of Korea communist. At the United Nations meeting, excluding the Soviet Union, the United Nations agreed on sending military defences to the democratic South Korea. The presence of the strong military based United States turned the war around and pushed the North Korean forces back to the North and towards the Chinese border. Being a communist country in 1949 the Peoples Republic of China saw the communism in North Korea in danger and send hundred of thousands of troops of the Yalu River towards the Americans and North Koreans, which were halting around Pyongyang. Eventually it turned out to be a loss for the Chinese and the UN and South Korean forces which were fighting with no end in sight. In 1952, republican Dwight D. Eisenhower criticised the actions of Truman in the Korean war and was elected President making him responsible for the war in Korea. In July 1951 peace talks had begun, Eisenhower who thrived for peace, had been in South Korea to look at the situation decided to publicly announce that the United States might use their Nuclear weapons to end the War in Korea. He ordered the nationalist Taiwan to begin air strikes on the mainland of china, and

“Yet where does this anarchy exist? Where did it ever exist except in the single instance of Shays’ rebellion?” Shays Rebellion was a period of time where farmers stole arms from the government and forcefully took over large areas of land. They rebelled because they were being put in jail for being unable to pay off their taxes. Although many will argue that Shays and his followers were freedom fighters, nevertheless they were irresponsible rebels because they were led under false ideas, many saw them as violent criminals, and they were put in this situation by fault of their own.…

Truman relieved Douglas MacArthur of command of the U.S. forces in Korea. The dismissal of MacArthur set off a brief uproar among the American public, but Truman remained committed to keeping the conflict in Korea a “limited war.” Problems with the flamboyant and egotistical General had been brewing for months. In the beginning of the war in Korea the general had devised some brilliant strategies and military maneuvers the helped save South Korea from falling to the invading forces of North Korea. As U.S. and United Nations forces turned the tide of battle in Korea, MacArthur argued for a policy of pushing into North Korea to completely defeat the communist forces. Truman went along with this plan, but worried that the communist government of the People's Republic of China might take the invasion as a hostile act and intervene in the conflict. In October 1950, MacArthur met with Truman and assured him that the chances of a Chinese intervention were slim. Then, in November and December 1950, hundreds of thousands of Chinese troops crossed into North Korea and flung themselves against the American lines, driving the U.S. troops back into South Korea. MacArthur then asked for permission to bomb communist China and use Nationalist Chinese forces from Taiwan against the People's Republic of China. Truman flatly refused these requests and a very public argument…

While the two world powers never fought face to face, their ideological differences caused proxy wars, in which both countries would support opposing sides of a war effort as a way of competition. The Korean War was the first substantial battle between the two countries in the name of containment. Before the 1950’s invasion by the North Korean Army, Korea had been divided into two sectors; the communist North, supported by the Soviet Union, and the anti communist South, supported by the United States (Foner 715). The Truman administration sent American troops into Korea in an attempt to militarily suppress the northern invasion. Through the help of the United Nations, fifteen other countries also committed resources to the Southern Korean side.…

American Secretary of State John Foster Dulles often bragged about how nuclear brinkmanship by the United States finally brought the other side to agree to a negotiated settlement of the Korean War in July 1953. According to him it proved that the threat of massive retaliation or a "a bigger bang for a buck" could work. It is true that America let it slip that atomic weapons being placed in Okinawa, that Chiang Kai-shek was being permitted to attempt attacks on the Chinese mainland, and that Nehru was being told to issue the Chinese with an ultimatium.…

China therefore cautioned the United States not to broach the Chinese/North Korean border at the Yalu River; however, MacArthur ignored the threat and he pursued the North Koreans farther up the peninsula. After construing this move as a clear offensive declaration of war, the Chinese dispatched hundreds of thousands of soldiers across the Yalu to meet MacArthur’s men in North Korea. Overpowered and outnumbered, MacArthur and his assemblage retreated back to the safer bounds behind the Yalu River. At an impasse once again at the 38th parallel, MacArthur insisted to Truman that dropping nuclear bombs on mainland China was the next move. MacArthur’s presumption was that this would not only allow his soldiers to gain command of the entire Korean Peninsula but would also oust the Communist regime based in Beijing.…

Generally summarizing the Korean War as in Blair’s Forgotten War – At the end of World War II the western half of the world (the Capitalist side) and the eastern half of the world (the Communist side) divided the Korean peninsula into two nations, the northern half communist and the southern half American occupied and capitalist. The two nations were divided at the 38th parallel. The Korean War itself began when the communist North Koreans invaded their South Korean neighbors by advancing over the 38th parallel boundary, on the 28th of June 1951 when the North Korean army, using Russian equipment and advisors, had conquered much of South Korea, a poorly equipped and poorly led U.S. Army came to the rescue of the South Koreans. President Truman had basically stripped the U.S. Army’s equipment and manpower down to nothing for budget reasons, believing that his military advisors spoiled, dumb, and “big spenders”, (sparing no expense to win a battle). Truman believed that he could do better than any military official. General Douglas MacArthur, on whom Blair spares no criticism, had been overseeing the occupation of Japan, and was a decorated general during WWII in the Pacific theater, he was the obvious choice to be appointed commander of the U.S. forces which were to hold back the North Korean army at Pusan – the tip of the Korean peninsula. MacArthur was in command of…

The first thing that has to be noted about the Korean War is the indirect confrontation of the superpowers thus united states of America and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR). These two super powers were of different ideology and beliefs. The USA believed in democracy and was capitalist whilst the USSR was more of dictatorship and was communists. The USSR came in Korea to support the Northern part of Korea which was under the rule of the communist, Kim ll Sung, after the defeat of Japan by the USA. The USSR supported the south because of its ‘sphere of influence’. The USSR saw Korea as an easy access to the newly ‘born’ communist Japan. It had its own economical interests. On the other hand, the USA under the approval of the UN joined by giving military support to the anti-communist Dr.Syngman Rhee, the leader of the South Korea, for several reasons. Some of the reasons were; Truman was convinced that the attack by Kim II Sung was Stalin’s doing and saw it as a Russian plan to spread communism as widely as possible so she had to take action as soon as possible. Also, some Americans saw the invasion as similar to…

Despite the total victory and unconditional surrender in the recent World War II, the Korean War was not along the same lines whatsoever. The Korean War began when the North and South were divided at the 38th parallel; suddenly, the Communist North invaded the south and most of it was consumed except for a final southernmost city. There, General MacArthur was sent my President Truman to Korea for a “police action.” With U.N advancements up near the Chinese-Korean border, the Chinese sent their own troops to force MacArthur back near the original border lines, where MacArthur called for extra support and was denied.…
