supports that Grace is tough and has the willpower to get through the toughest situations, which the book gave an example of, jumping off of a wall. Furthermore, on the back cover, it states, “Grace Blakely is absolutely certain of three things…. 1. She is Not Crazy,” (back cover). The phrase gives somewhat of an absurd connotation and definitely adds to the impression, by letting us know Grace is in her right-mind and knows her situation. Overall, from the first impression, I understand Grace as a fierce, independent, and seems like she has a plan. Further onto Grace’s main motivation of finding her mother’s killer.
Again, the book mentioned, “Grace Blakely is absolutely certain of three things...1. She is not crazy 2. Her mother was murdered 3. Someday she is going to find the killer and make him pay,” (Inside Jacket Cover). This is the first thought represented in the overall summary, showing that it is significant to the story, and really stresses the main motivation of Grace for the whole book. Moving on, when Grace was 13, a government agent was ordered to assassinate Grace’s mom, Caroline Blakely. The murder was supposed to be going to be faked by the agent, for he was a good friend of Caroline, but Grace’s mother did die at the end of the day. From the murder scene, Grace remembered the scar on the agent’s face, and in the present, used the remembrance to her advantage. Throughout the book, this mysterious “scarred-man” figure keeps coming up, “and it all comes rushing back to me. The cliffs. The party. The Scarred Man,”(pgs. 78 and 79). Grace believed finding this man will help her turn in her mother’s murderer and thinks it is the most important sign. Overall, in the first part of book, Grace’s main motivation is finding her mother’s killer and getting justice, and so far, she thinks she has a good
lead. The main protagonist in my book has multiple elements to her identify. The author gave many cues explaining how she physically appears, mentally acts, and emotionally behaves. Grace is a teenage girl, 16 years old to be exact, who is best known for being the granddaughter of the U.S. Ambassador of Adria. Furthermore, Grace has blonde hair and brown eyes. More forward, some of Grace’s many emotional and character traits were mentioned above. Another trait she possesses is independence. She has gone through a lot of series of events throughout her life already, from breaking limbs to losing her mother, and just wants figure situations out by herself. But that can’t happen, for their is usually always someone keeping an eye out for her. In the book, Grace says, “you’re following me….That’s really annoying,,,,I can take care of myself,” (pg. 67). This serves to show an example of Grace communicating with Alexei, who keep trying to protect Grace from harm or mischief. Although, Grace’s reaction is very unapproving of the “help”, since, of course, she’s more into the “lone wolf” style. Another trait that she owns is adaptability. She can easily fluctuate to the best needs of the environment, both physically, and mentally. First of all, after fracturing her left forearm at age 10, dislocated her right shoulder climbing a tree, breaking her leg jumping off a wall, breaking an ankle in Alabama, and lots more, Grace is pretty much immune to physical complications. It’s simple, she get’s hurt then sometime later, she is good as new, which is the very handy adaptable trait coming into play. Moving on, being the thrill-seeker she is, Grace is always looking for an adventure in her free time. But sometimes her adventures turn into trouble, such as when Noah Estaban, from the Brazilian Embassy, and takes her to a secret party for the first day of the summer holidays. She doesn’t end up clicking well with multiple other children of different embassies, which goes with her more individualistic personality. At this party, it is the first time she spots the scarred person and realizes he is still within the embassy. Overall, Grace is from the U.S. Embassy in Adria, is reckless and fearless, and is almost always dirty.
