    Letter Grades Fail

In the article “Why some schools are giving letter grades a fail,” written by Erin Millar in April 2014 for the Globe and Mail newspaper, various perspectives of assessing students’ work is discussed. Millar begins by attributing the opinion of Ms. Wolfram, who is a parent of a student in Grade 2 as she states “some of were scared to change” after realizing that schools are slowly discontinuing to award letter grades in elementary schools.…

One positive to Grade Inflation is the fact that students are less stressed over grades and school over all, besides the more money the school gets as a result of higher letter grade output. Although students are less stressed, the do however become lazier which in the end results in more stupid people. Some students might take advantage of this and take more classes or do positive and valuable things outside of school. This would not be a problem if students are responsible for their education, and see that grades are not the main reason why students go to school. Students go to schools to learn and understand what they learn. Teachers in grade school should teach students to focus on the material instead of the grades. The grades should only be a representation of what the students knows and what the students is capable of understands, not how well they can hold their bladder or the amount of printer paper they can take to school.…

    Grading Scale

Anyone who has attended a high school or college will readily say that one of the most stressful aspects of the entire experience is grades. Students will loose hours of sleep per night poring over textbooks, clutching a pen in one hand and a mug of Starbucks coffee in the other. They soon foster an obsession with achieving and maintaining perfect grades to the point where anything that earns less than "A" is a disgusting failure. The lengths students go to in hopes of attaining good grades is maximal, often including the exchange of cash or sexual favors with their superiors for changed grades! It had been postulated that instructors are more likely to raise the grade of an attractive, tearful student than with the same plea whose looks might not be up to the same standard as their peers (Perlmutter, 2004). But why is there an unhealthy fixation on these letters and point values? Why is the siren 's call of the almighty "A" so strong that anything less is a monstrous travesty? On the other end of the spectrum, why is a "D" considered a passing grade when "C" is looked upon as just ok or "average?"…

Getting a low grade points average "GPA" in college could have major negative effects on the future of a student and lead to adverse outcomes, especially for those candidates that are planning to attend graduate school, use high GPA level as a mean to secure governmental or private financial aid, or even for those that are looking to join the workforce. Most graduate studies have a list of requirements to accept candidates to their schools, including a minimum GPA, letter of recommendations, and a minimum GMAT or GRE test scores. Indeed, the majority of schools require a minimum GPA of 3.0 to be accepted to their programs, As a result, students who have low grades are less likely to gain admission to major or top ranked schools. On the other hand, schools that usually accept students with low grades they are most likely second- and third-tier institutions and a degree from them may not carry the same prestige as one from a first-rate universities. College scholarships are often tied up to grades, and students that fail to maintain a good GPA can lose scholarship money and even financial aid. Some states offer free or discounted tuition to students who maintain reasonably high grades. Although financial aid will allow students a grace period of a semester to bring up their grades, a lower grade can trigger financial issues and leave students scrambling for money to cover tuition. The most important effect of getting a bad GPA is the difficulty to get a job fresh-out of college. Nowadays, most employers that recruit recent graduates require a minimum GPA, especially if you are applying for technical openings. Certain employers may even favor recruiting recent graduates from certain programs or schools over others. Indeed, depending on the employer and for these type of candidates, GPA requirements may range anywhere between 2.8 and 3.5 or even higher. School names as well as the overall GPA give the employer a general idea and a warm fuzzy feeling on the intellectual…

    Grades Are All Average

Back in 1969 getting a C on a test or homework was acceptable. However, as the day go by, it seems that getting a C is the “mark of Cain.” Why is that? A professor from Duke University and a visiting scholar to Stanford University, Stuart Rojstaczer, asked that same question. After doing his own research, he wrote the article “Where All Grades Are Above Average” which analyzes the phenomena that is commonly known as grade inflation in several universities and colleges. Rojstaczer explains, “the previous signs of academic disaster, D and F, went by the wayside in the Vietnam era, when flunking out meant becoming eligible for the draft.” Many parts of the United States disagreed with the country’s involvement with the war. Rojstaczer explains…

It was a rookie error. After 10 years I should have known better, but I went to my office the day after final grades were posted. There was a tentative knock on the door. “Professor Wiesenfeld? I took your Physics 2121 class? I flunked it? I wonder if there’s anything I can do to improve my grade?” I thought: “Why are you asking me? Isn’t it too late to worry about it? Do you dislike making declarative statements?”…

    The Letter Grading System

The letter grading system can even impact the National Security field. How the letter grading system can affect the National Security field is when candidates are hired, employers just look at transcripts that state the applicant passed a course with a good grade or not. When they look through the transcripts the employer will not be able to tell if the employee had struggles or not in school because there isn’t anything stating the employee has improved on the subject that they were struggling on. When this happens, the employer hires the person on board and the employee that just got hired may not at all be qualified for the job and not being qualified can cause problems in the defense of the United States.…

    Grade Retention

Grade retention, better known as "staying back", "being held back" or "repeating", has been the topic of much debate within the educational system. The controversy which surrounds this long-standing issue has been reinforced by such topics as the recent endorsement of academic standards. Research indicates that "the rate of retention has increased by approximately 40% in the last 20 years with as many as 15% of all American students held back each year and 30-50% held back at least once before ninth grade" (Dawson, 1998). These discouraging statistics pose copious problems within a school system. The difficulties can be appreciated at the organizational level, as well as inside the classroom and, most troubling, within the individual students. The consequences, both positive and negative, reverberate throughout the school system. Grades retention is an issue which requires a prodigious amount of examination and should be considered carefully and thoroughly.…

    more than just a grade

We all have different thought processes and skills, so why are we individuals all tested by the same means? Society tries to change us to fit into their puzzle called life, when we should be changing the picture. This is the same society that tells us abortions is wrong yet looks down on teenage parents. This society also sells products to promote healthy skin and hair, yet the women on the package have hair extensions, fake nails, and are photo shopped. Pastors preach forgiveness and acceptance yet say you’re wrong and are going to hell for different beliefs. Governments preach peace but endorse war. They say laws are made to protect us, yet our cries for help are ignored. We are told to break unjust laws, but they call you a rebel who thinks their above the law when you do. You’re told to be unique and stand out, but are criticized for not fitting in and are called attention seekers. I don’t expect everyone to understand, except the kids who know what it feels like to feel worth no more than the grade they got on their report card, and the ones whose best stories were never good enough for the teacher because you missed out key little techniques, didn’t follow the class plan, and the language was too informal. Then the teacher would reference Julius Caesar and hamlet and all you could do is to grin and bear it. When your teacher would finish you would say “did you know that Shakespeare was the innovator of slang? Society looked onto him as a mad man for having such outrageous thoughts.” Some of the most revolutionary people throughout history were considered outcasts. As Albert Einstein once said “Everyone is a genius, but if you judge a fish on its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing it is stupid.” So why are we told that in order to succeed in life we must all have the same education when we are all building towards different futures? Grades have been proven to help students stay on…

    grade retention

    • 6 Pages

Grade retention, also known as “flunking” or being held back, is one of the most common ways to raise educational standards. Retention occurs when teachers and administrators and/or parents do not feel the student is ready to be promoted to the next grade due to academic or maturity reasons. The student then has to repeat the previous year until they pass or are prepared for the next grade. Many people in the educational field feel that retention is one of the most beneficial methods that help students who are not ready gain the skills and knowledge they need in order to be successful in the following grades. However, since the 70’s, research has shown that effects of grade retention are predominantly negative (Martin 741). If this is true, why does around 5-7% of the public school population in the U.S get retained annually (Shepard and Smith 84)? This paper will discuss the social, emotional, and academic disadvantages of being retained, why teachers think retention is a good idea and what they can do instead of retaining a student.…

My weighted average grade for each semester has an overall uptrend during last three years. Moreover, I am academic competent in my studied field, with a weighted average score of 89 for the specialized courses related to economics and finance. Additionally, the scores for all three econometrics courses are higher than 93, which shows evidence for my good quantitative skills and software operation skills. However, I performed relatively bad in several mathematics courses, partly because I were not accustomed to the new teaching and test methods when I just entered college.…
