Graduation Speech: Preparing For Confirmation
August 29th, 2015

Dear Father Ray Atwood,

Hello. My name is Ryan Connolly and I am currently preparing for Confirmation. I am 17 years old and I am a Senior at Union High School in La Porte City, IA. I have been preparing for Confirmation for several years now and I would like to be confirmed.

I want to be confirmed because I have been preparing for this sacrament and I am ready. I have learned that Confirmation is not the end of my faith life, but just the beginning. I am ready to take my faith seriously, become active in my parish, and live out my faith through service.

I have had several service experiences throughout the past couple of years that have been very meaningful to me. One service project in particular was important to

A sacrament is an "outward and visible sign of an inward and spiritual grace". Confirmation is furthering our commitment to God with your own heart, mind and soul. I believe that being confirmed allows to become an adult member of the Catholic Church. Confirmation is the strengthening of the Christian faith and the full communion with the church. Confirmation gives us an understanding of the Holy Spirit and helps us spread the faith by word and action as followers of Christ. Confirmation allows us to become connected to the…

Volunteering for service hours changed my outlook on life. I worked with the Hydrocephalus Association in both eleventh and twelfth grade. The Hydrocephalus Association focuses on three things community, clarity, and cure. Hydrocephalus is a condition defined by an abnormal, excessive accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) within the cavities of the brain. Some people with this condition can live a normal life being unnoticeable while other have difficulties. The association works on awareness to find a cure, clarity in helping families further understand the condition, and a community which will always be supportive. Service hours can sometimes be a hassle but once I started volunteering with that association it became fun because I was…

What do we do after finally concluding that Christianity is the truth for which we have been searching? The author gives us four simple steps to follow. They are: (1) Own Up to the Truth about Yourself: Be honest — admit that you are a sinner in need of a savior, (2) Be Willing to Change: Repent — be willing to move away from your patterns of sinful behavior, (3) Believe the Message: Believe Jesus was who He said he was; believe the story of the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus; and believe that in Him, you will receive the promise of eternal life. (4) Receive the Gift: To receive the gift, the author offered a prayer you should pray. If you pray it and really mean it, you will become…

Why did I get baptized? The answer to that was simple; everyone else in my family were already Christian so I might as well follow their lead. I lived for six years after that not knowing the true meaning behind being a Christian. I was constantly angry and hurt and heart-broken and filled with lust and the list goes on... and on… I was poor but God provided; I was weak but God made me strong; I was broken but God mended my broken pieces, and through all this, I knew it had to be God because I could not make it through those rough,…

One thing people have always told me is that I remind them of the person Randall Cobb from the book game changers. He has one of the most creative and unique personalities. He is passionate for the game of basketball by working hard on his time. Randall is also talented in the subjects math and science by pushing himself to make good grades. He also thrives to help people even if it's with school work, personal problems, or on the basketball court. All in all he was almost exact the same person as I am he likes basketball, he helps others, and he does well in school.…

One of my first parts of my journey through this rite of passage was giving up my old life of sin. I stepped away from some of my old ways such as cussing, drinking in excess, feelings and actions of lust for the opposite sex. While going through this stage I also had to separate my self from many of my old friends who were corrupting me. I was to put to death my old way of living and become renewed through Jesus Christ. I had to speak with a member of the pastoral staff at the church I was attending to see if this was something I was ready for. I chose to speak with the youth pastor because he is the one I felt I knew best. Even though I was somewhat comfortable with the youth pastor I was nervous to explain why I was ready to become baptized. When I was being baptized they dunked me under water symbolizing the drowning or death of my old self.…

Here are some examples of my service to my community. During my 8th grade year in Elena Christian Jr. High School, both my classmates and I, we decided to do a beach cleanup. We chose the beach across from Water Gut. It was a wonderful experience because I was able to help out my community in a positive way. I volunteer and participate with the Junior Meteorology Club of Elena L. Christian Junior High School. I help with certain fundraisers such as; bake sales, car washes and collecting donations. I like to be there for people who are in need because it shows people that I am a caring and loving person. I also volunteered at the Agriculture Fair of 2010. I was helping out the Virgin Islands Police Department booth, assisting the police cadets, police officers, lieutenants and as well as the commissioner. Both my mom and I, we donated funds for Haiti at the VIPD in Frederiksted.…

In the request of receiving my confirmation, I have chosen the name Michael. I have chosen saint Michael as Saint Michael represents a great purpose, as it is one that many should follow. Saint Michael the Archangel is the patron saint of those who risk their lives and work in dangerous conditions, an example of these people could be, Firemen, Soldiers, Police officers, and paramedics. Saint Michael is a saint of only pure goodness, he himself leads an army of angels to battle Satan in an eternal war. Saint Michael is a protector and warrior for all that is good but ultimately defeats any sense of evil.…

One of my most meaningful service opportunities was volunteering in the Utah Special Olympics last June. I spent the morning and early afternoon managing the Track and Field events of the Summer Games with friends and leaders from my church. This experience gave me a welcome change of perspective and an opportunity to focus on something greater than myself. On this day, I had the privilege of spending time with some of the kindest people I have ever met.…
