Graduation Speech: The Browns Never Give Up
The Browns never gave up. Year after year, game after game, humiliating defeat after humiliating defeat. To a Brown’s fan, the game wasn’t about winning, it was about grit. Our guys could take the biggest beating in the NFL and keep on going.

What kind of lesson does this send to my kids Jon? Never give up and you might succeed? Aim high and strive to be the best? That’s not what the Browns stood for.

This story makes me think about how believing in yourself and working hard can basically help you achieve any goals you have in mind. Jake Cullen had stopped believing in himself for a brief period of time in the beginning of the book. He thought he had no chance of becoming the first string quarterback for Granger High. He kept getting down on himself for worthless thing like overthrowing a ball to Calvin, there #1 receiver, in one of Jake’s first practices. He continued to get down on himself until Coach Jessup, the offensive coordinator, helped him by having one-on-one sessions with Jake after practices. Coach Jessup would help him with his throws and tell him valuable things like “Be Jake Cullen, not Wyatt Cullen,” and “The #1 thing you need to remember is, as long as you believe in yourself, you can do anything.” After about a week or two into these practices with his coach, Jake had already changed, not only with his throws, but with his…

To be successful one must possess an important trait, grit. Firstly, perseverance is needed to overcome the obstacles in life. For example, Arian Foster was not selected in the NFL draft. That did not stop him on his quest to be a star running back. In sum, Arian worked his way never giving up, from the bottom of the league to his dream of becoming a star running back. Secondly, passion is what drives us to keep moving forward. For instance, Arian was always doubted but that did not discourage his drive for success. Thus, he used the doubt as motivation to become who he wanted to be. Thirdly, effort has to be put out to have results. In particular, Arian had limited opportunities to show what skill he has. Until injuries to other running backs…

In the beginning of the story Jesse practiced with his brother for the little league team until the day of the tryouts. When he got to the tryouts Jesse didn’t lose hope and kept doing his best. Jesse didn’t make the team that year, but he wasn’t going to give up either. Instead Jesse finds an alternative option. For example when “Pete, a friend from school, told them about a team of kids from their school that practiced at Hobo Park near downtown.” After school that day they both rushed down to get some practice. This shows that even though he didn’t make the team Jesse still didn’t give up at the sport he loved, he was determined to get better.…

Likewise, perfection and happiness do not always come from winning or having money. The most important lesson I have learned this season was that being perfect is not about the scoreboard. It's not about winning. It's about you and your relationship with yourself, your family and your friends. Being perfect is about being able to look your friends in the eye and know that you didn’t let them down because you did everything you could – that there wasn’t one more thing you could have done, and when the going got tough, you did not put your head down and give up, but you fought on. Winning is not about who hits the hardest, but who can get hit hard and still keep moving forward. Applying that mentality to my life has made me a more successful and happy person regardless of whether or not I win, lose, triumph or fail. Life and football are very similar, both have their ups and downs, and your ability to keep a level head and never get too high or too low is what makes you a winner. The experience of my last year of high school football was the culmination of all the lessons I have learned through out my life, on and off the…

The Super Bowl is one of the most watched and publicized games in all of sports. This past February, 111 million people worldwide watched the Patriots defeat the Falcons in overtime. In past ten championship games, the Patriots have appeared four times and won two. Out of every team in the National Football League (NFL), the Patriots have played in the big game nine times and won five. In contrast, the Browns have never won or been to a Super Bowl.
