Fun with Words
It was Sunday. The sky was as clear as crystal. Haadia was sitting in the garden with a heap of books beside her. Just then her friend, Fatima, came and joined her.
Fatima: Hi! Haadia! Can I pick your brains for a few minutes?
Haadia: Hello! Sure. Come on, sit down!
Fatima: Where have you been? Long time no see!
Haadia: Oh, I've been really busy these days and I haven't had time to relax.
Fatima: Oh, so you're as busy as a bee!
Haadia: What about you?
Fatima: Alhamdulillah! I'm doing very well. Did you hear the news? I got first prize in my school's poetry competition?
Haadia: That's wonderful, MashaAllah! your parents must be very proud of you.
Fatima: Yes, they took me out for an ice cream that very evening...

In A&P, it is much more likely to find common nouns as opposed to proper nouns. Common nouns are all around us and make up a great amount of most sentences. For example, in the sentence “You never know for sure how girls' minds work (do you really think it's a mind in there or just a little buzz like a bee in a glass jar?)” (Updike, A&P), the common nouns would be “girls’”, “minds”, “bee”, and “glass jar”. These are all common words, or things, thus making them common nouns.…

    Hannah's Gift Analysis

    • 930 Words

Two specific memories after Hannah passed away had a strong impact on me as I read. The first was when Maria received the woven rug from a stranger saying the rug was a gift from Hannah. The story of Hannah continuously ran through the woman’s mind, seeming as though it was a sign from God and message from Hannah to her family saying she was with them. I was confused at first since it seemed quite strange that this message was received via a random stranger to Maria, but as she described the details woven into the rug, my confusion turned to awe. The angel woven into the rug resembled specific details of Hannah and included the pink rose resembling the middle name Hannah chose for her new baby sister at the time. The second memory was when Madelaine exclaimed she played with Hannah in heaven before she was born as they passed the pink house Hannah once claimed she would own one day. This was very heartwarming and awe inspiring as well since they had never discussed Hannah liking this house before. It sparked my fascination in how a child’s mind operates and revealed the presence of God working in the mind of a child.…

    Gender Dialectics Theory

Here we will research and develop ideas on how gender dialects are different. More so often than not, men are associated with what seems to be a more direct, linear, uninterrupted, objective, and independent way of speaking. Men value independence, power, and accomplishments while communicating. When women speak it is associated with a tendency to speak in a questioning, circular, from the heart, and subjective manner. Women tend to value connection and relationships while communicating. This connects to report vs. rapport, men are externally focused and often view situations as issues to be resolved, and they talk to inform others. Women however, are internally focused and often talk as a way to connect and relate to others.…

"Who" and "whom", "he" and "him", "she" and "her", etc. are a conflation of the old accusative and dative cases, as well as of the genitive case after prepositions. This conflated form is called the oblique case, or the object (objective) case because it is used for objects of verbs (direct, indirect, or oblique) as well as for objects of prepositions. The information formerly conveyed by having distinct case forms is now mostly provided by prepositions and word order. In Old English as well as modern German and Icelandic as further examples, these cases had distinct forms.…
