At dinner: I was out at dinner one night and I took sometime to start observing the different ways men and women "do gender". As men and women came into the restaurant I began to notice how different we walk, the women seem to walk with their legs much closer together with a dainty tippy-toe gait the men however walk with the legs further apart and much more of a slow dragging stroll. Watching the different groups of both sexes eating there were many similarities, the women have a better posture sitting up straight with legs crossed or legs closed together with knees touching. The men sit as if their shoulders are heavy with much of a slouch, feet apart and elbows on both sides of the table. As food was being served, I was…

Gender was always a very tricky subject for me until I finally realized gender and sex are two different things. So, gender was never something I ever really thought about. I was a girl and that was that. It was definitely assumed for me based on my biological “label” of female at birth. I grew up with two sisters so there were lots of baby dolls and Barbies. But as I got older, aspects of other gender(s) became aware to me that I decided I wanted to incorporate into my own gender. I did not like wearing dresses so that “norm” was thrown out of my wardrobe options. I was much more comfortable in pants and a t-shirt playing outside. I became very interested in sports and always wanted to be outside shooting baskets or throwing around…

The film XXY (really not a Y, but an X that has a leg snapped off) follows the life of Alex, a 15-year old intersex person struggling with her gender identity. She was born with both male and female genitalia, and because of this her family moved to a small seaside village in Uruguay to avoid stigma and prejudice that Alex would undoubtedly face in Argentina. She lives with her mom and her dad who is a marine biologist and has also written a book on sexuality. Alex has been raised as a girl, and she has been taking medication to block development of male features. However, she has recently stopped taking the medication.…

    Sex vs Gender

The audience was in an uproar as they had guessed the wrong gender of a woman, Danielle, on a recently aired episode of Maury: MAN or WOMAN. Danielle held many features that the audience characterized as a woman: the long, curly red hair, the “coke bottle” body, the model walk, the perfectly formed busty boobs and the flawless skin; however, Danielle, biologically, was a male. This uproar was prompted by the defilement of societal expectations that an individual’s biological sex should determine a fixed gendered behavior. In essence, Danielle was to be a Dan with expected man behavior and male genitalia. This, however, is a common misconception in society. Because gender and sex are often used interchangeably in society, the specific distinctions in their definitions are often overlooked; therefore, the important insight one can gain from looking beyond the binaries of female/male and woman/man are often disregarded.…

The location I chose to observe behavior in a public setting was the food court at the Everett mall on Saturday April 26th from 1:00-1:20pm. The food court is packed with people bustling in and out amidst their shopping. It seems a universal for many to be looking at their phones. While I did make short observations about the mass group of people I decided to narrow in and focus on a few groups of people. The first couple of individuals I observed were a female and male. The female had her hair up in a clip and wore a red summer dress with long dangly crystal earrings and high healed sandals. She had a heavy amount of makeup on and had painted red nails a similar shade to that of her dress. The male had a short haircut and wore a blue t-shirt with ripped jeans, brown boots and a large watch on his left hand. The male maintained a ridged posture while the female would tend to slouch and would bend her knees periodically. Consistently positioning herself in a way that made her shorter than the male she was speaking to. The next group of people I observed was 4 females eating various foods. They each had their hair in a tight pony tail and were wearing athletic clothing (shorts, tennis shoes, and t-shirts with their last names on the back). They were deeply involved in conversation leaning closely in towards one another. The next group of I observed were four males and two females. The males wore either brown knee length shorts or jeans. Each of them had various short haircuts with the exception of one who had his hair in a tight ponytail. One of the females had shorts and a tank top on with French tip acrylic nails while the other had jeans and a deep V-neck cut shirt. They both had their hair down one had shoulder length strait hair while the other had a pixie cut. One of the males had his arm wrapped tightly around the female with long hair she in turn was leaning her head against his…

After watching the Adventure Time episode “Fionna and Cake” and reading “Berengier of the Long Ass,” the expectations of genders are exposed through the reversal of roles in both of these pieces. The characters in these stories clearly demonstrate the expectations that certain males and females must negotiate in order to expose the problems when there is labeling of certain genders. Judith Butler’s analysis of gender is that it is performative- meaning that nobody really is a gender from the start; after watching the video and reading the text for this exercise, it is clear that Fionna and The Knight expose the misconceptions of gender throughout societies today.…

First, I describe my gender identity as a female, because I was born a female, and have no problem being who God created me to be. I love being a woman and do not see myself as being masculine or feminine. I am me, with my personalilty. If I had to pick a gender identity based on the textbook my gender identity would be androgynous. It is sad that if a child or adults has the personality traits such as ambitious, competitive, and self-sufficient they're categorized as being masculine. This way of thinking is a put down to females who are considered as being feminine; just because you are a female does not mean you should not or can not be ambitious, competitive, and self-sufficient. The opposite is also true; you can be a male, be affectionate,…

Being yourself and being who you are mean two different things. When hearing the two lines, one may tend to think that both phrases mean the same however, they don’t. Put some thought into it; are babies born with talent, ideas, goals or preferences? No, as an individual grows up, they develop these things and they develop their own personal identity as a result. Today in the fields of modern science, psychology and neuroscience, as well as literature and pop culture, the behavior of males and how they should appear as true men is heavily debated. In “Were You Born That Way?” George Howe Colt ’s main argument is between nature and nurture. He uses his own experiences and parenthood to support his argument by using genetic facts, realistic emotion and the way he gives himself knowledge. John Updike delivers his own personal account in "The Disposable Rocket." Reflecting on the recklessness of his male youth, he describes the essence of being a man with great imagery. He notes that his constant quest for sexual pleasure, the greedy thirst for adventure, and bold carelessness are features that glorify the male body. However, one could argue that men can be much more than that; they can be anything they want. In other words, Updike describes a type of lifestyle which- at least in the 21st century- is not unique to, or descriptive of the male gender.…

I am from South Texas meaning the farthest anyone can go without actually crossing the border with Mexico. Growing up in this place was a balancing act because you are living in a clash of two cultures that did not, particularly, think highly of women, but our house was a blend of traditional ways and more liberal thoughts. My parents are permanent residents that originally came from Mexico to the United States to work in the fields. It is important to understand that my parents finished high school in a time where attending past the second grade, in Mexico, was a luxury. For this reason, they are more open minded than other Mexican parents. Although they are more liberal, I did grow up surrounded by gender stereotypes imposed implicitly by…

In today's society people should be working towards integration and finding new ways to get along with one another. The human race needs to try to coexist on this planet; however, there are barriers which separate us and place everyone into stereotypes and categories. These things are meaningful to who a person is and they are large pieces of a person's personality, but culture, language and gender are superficial in the means of equality and harmony amongst the human race. What makes a person different should be celebrated rather than criticized and segregated.…

Blonde hair, blue eyes, long legs, the perfect 10; Barbie. Barbie was the top selling doll for girl’s ages seven to thirteen from 1959 to 2006. This fashion diva has gone to Hawaii, has many different looks, a mansion, and a number of different vehicles. While Barbie has everything she could ever want, what does she teach our children? Little girls want to be perfect, like Barbie, a nearly unachievable goal. It lowers their self-worth and sets unrealistic standards. Because of this, some countries are restricting the sales of the dolls and even with the new advancement’s Mattel has made to improve Barbie’s “aura” so-to-speak, there is still a very prominent suggestive gender orientation; such roles now include, architect, computer designer, veterinarian, teacher, pastry chef, and female sports. Barbie dolls influence very stereotypical gender roles when developing gender identity; these toys teach that girls are to be tall, thin, pretty house wives and caregivers.…
