Gran Torino
"Gran Torino" is an American drama film directed by Clint Eastwood, and one of the most successful films in the world. It won the "Best Foreign Film", "Best Original Screenplay", "Best Actor" award at 2008 and so on. I believe a good film is made in many ways of aspect skill. At this time, I will be looking at four different aspects which are camera shot using, dialogue, main idea of the film, music editing in "Gran Torino" to shows what sort of skill involved is need in a film, why do we need them and what are the advances after using these skills? One of the key ideas in this film was "Human has the ability to change". We can content Walt (the main character) at the begging; the film start with Walt has just lost his wife. In the funeral, we know Walt alienated from his family because of his grumpy, easy to angry, can't get along with his kids grandson or his Asian neighbours, a Korean War veteran. His dog and Gran Torino are the only friends with him. When the first time he meets Thao, a close up shot show Walt's face and he says" Have some respect zipper head". When he saw the Asian people in next door, he said "How many swamp rats can you get in one room?" Maybe that was what gives him after he attends the Korean War. In a word; Walt is very hate Asian people. As Walt doesn't, but change slowly through the influence of people and events in their lives. Walt changes because he realizes he has more in common with his neighbours than his own family and becomes something of a hero when he prevents the gangbangers from forcing Thao join into their gang. He gradually takes Thao under his wing, teaching him about life and helps him to get a job. Walt become father figures to Thao, he is a general good man. When the gang shoots up Thao's house and attack his sister Sue. Walt was angry, keep hitting things in his house; it's time for him to take action, though not in a way you would expect, he used his life to free Thao and his family, because the friendship. A

Walter Lee is the head of the family and in the beginning of the play he seems to be extremely bitter. He works for a rich white man as a chauffeur. This easily makes him bitter on the inside because he sees everyday what it is like to be rich. You can tell this because he tells Mama that he sees the rich white boys sitting down to eat every day and he knows they are talking about business or something about closing a million dollar deal. Walter Lee has had many business ideas in the past but they all seem to flop to the ground in a hurry like humpty dumpty. When he comes up with the idea of going into partnership with some men to open a liquor store his Mama is upset with him. He eventually convinces her into giving him a cut of the money from the insurance company after she buys a house for them to move in to. When he gives the money to his partner for the business, his partner runs with the money and is not seen again. This makes Walter very upset and he goes off the deep end for a short amount of time. The need of money may be important but it is definitely not worth losing your family over. After the money is lost, Walter invites the white man back to the apartment to discuss his offer and plans to accept the bribe to his family for them not to move. When the man gets to the apartment, Walter changes his mind and tells the…

In Fannie Flagg’s esteemed novel, Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Café, characters and lessons from both the past and present inspire our main character, Evelyn Couch, to make changes in her life. The epitome of middle-aged misery and menopausal depression, Evelyn learns lessons from the stories and advice given to her by characters such as Mrs. Virginia ‘Ninny’ Threadgoode help her lift the veil of gloom cloaking her and aid her in reestablishing her dreams and goals – such as gaining a healthier and happier marriage with her husband, Ed, or losing all her unnecessary pounds. What sparks her journey to this better life, one she can actually look forward to at night rather than considering suicide, are the stories of a small Alabama town in the 1930’s and the residents who fight for happiness in a difficult time; Evelyn takes these stories of times past and uses the morals and advice given by Ninny to face each of her problems and attack every day with confidence. The transformation Evelyn embarks on is a sign of how strong she, or anyone, can be when their head is in the game, and as we see Idgie still selling her foods at the end of the book, we conclude that the past can live on even into the present.…

Walter has risen high in the dark world, but to do so he’s moved from a protagonist to an antagonist. Cancer pushed him out of his own body and into the devils where he struggles with sick and twisted meth heads and trigger men. Walter has a changing persona one of which is an average American male who is growing old and the other half who is a drug perfection psycho taking over the protagonist half of him to do the deeds that no one could possibly do in their sane minds. “On the other hand, there are “real bad guys” as well that are in a way, worse than Walt. They are the Mexican drug cartel. This becomes a situation called the lesser of two evils. We know that unfavorable things are going to happen, so we pick the lesser of the two threats to root for”(Bad Guy). In this case by knowing Walt’s background history we would root for him because he is doing it for somewhat of a good purpose. But perspective ruins situations like this. If we knew the story from the point of view of Gus, it would be hard determining who the real bad guy is.…

Taking a look at the final movies, Gran Torino and Sixteen Candles, we have two very different movies in terms of tone, plot and characters. Gran Torino (2008) is a drama that revolves around an old, recently widowed Korean War veteran that appears disillusioned from the modern world and is alienated from his family and seemingly bitter towards everyone. By an at-first shaky relationship with his Hmong neighbors, Walt develops a connection with them and goes through a revelation of sorts about his life and eventually makes the ultimate sacrifice for a young Hmong boy. Sixteen Candles, on the other hand, is a coming of age story of a young teenage girl, Sam, and her journey through high school. Sam is seen as very insecure and unsatisfied with her love life but eventually is able to attract the boy of her dreams, as we see them embrace, in the now romantic comedy cliché.…

“Ever notice how you come across somebody once in a while you shouldn't have fucked with? That's me.” (Walt Kowalski, Gran Torino, 2008) After watching the movie Gran Torino, I certainly can agree with Walt's perspective on himself. Gran Torino was produced in the year of 2008, written by Nick Schenk and directed by Clint Eastwood. In this particular movie we see the cause and effects of several social issues, how through socialization these social issues can be resolved and perspectives can be altered. Previously watching this movie I believed most individuals values were set in stone from experiences learned through the journey of life. However, I now believe that anyone can change their beliefs, forming new attitudes, setting new values thus allowing the individual to make new choices.…

In the eyes of Suzanne Wong, Vito Corleone is a man who deserves to be admired. He is a man who does well and expects nothing less in return. In Wong’s essay, she constantly brings up the deeds he does for everyone. Her reasons about why Don Vito Corleone is such a great role model were very well explained and detailed. She builds up Vito’s character so others can view him as a god like figure, hence why his nickname is The Godfather. I do agree with her on some topics, but at the same time I disagree. I agree with Wong when she says friendships are important, and Vito really showed how important it was. In addition, I agree with her argument about traditional values. What I don’t necessarily agree with is what she said about success and how the Don achieved it by himself. So therefore I mainly agree with Wong but at the same time I disagree just a little. I agree with Corleone being a good role model because he values friendship and traditional values but I don’t agree that he is because his success all resulted from violence.…
