Grand Canyon Monument
I am going to use granite, concrete, and brick in the Grand Canyon monument to honor early explorers. I am choosing these items because I think these are some of the most high quality materials. I would like to build this monument very well, so that it will last for years and years. I also want to build this monument well because the early explorers worked very hard to do everything they could for the Grand Canyon, and I would like to honor them. Many people may have thought that everyone always knew about the Grand Canyon, or maybe they don’t care at all about the explorers of the Grand Canyon. Hopefully, this will influence people’s thoughts in a good way. For example, they could know people who need to be honored, so this monument will remind

The monument is in a very good condition although some part of the stone are chipped off. The overall form and figure were kept in a very good condition; therefore, it shows the advantages of using marble. Since marble is a long lasting material, the work that created on marble stone would last longer than other materials. But at the same time marble stone is a very hard material to carve on, and it would take more time to create a piece of art than using any other materials. Also, the transportation would be hard, because it is very heavy, so damages would…

“Ulysses S. Grant’s mausoleum is the largest tomb on the continent of North America.” (Aronson, p.78). Now formally known as General Grant National Memorial it is located in New York, NY. The architectural design on the tomb is very eye catching with many of Ulysses’ moments in history engraved on the rock itself or on mosaic glass panels. The panels show events like when he was a graduate of West Point , and the wars he served in which include the Mexican War, Civil War, Battle of Vicksburg and Chattanooga. One of the other panels show General…

The place is historically significant and synonymous with the Indian-French fur trading culture and lead mining industry during the 18th century. This monument showcases Julien Dubuque—one of the first European men to settle in the area and trade with the native people. Yucca Mountain. Just a mountain you may think, but not just any mountain. A mountain that our Congressmen decided would be a great repository storage facility for spent nuclear reactor fuel and other radioactive waste. 196 billion dollars were spent towards this project. Back in 1987, this project was the ideal project to store radioactive waste. As the 1990’s and 2000’s crept in, Nevada’s residents were against this idea big time. Funding for the Yucca Mountain Repository was discontinued by Congress in February 2010. I disagree with this discontinuation.…

The ingenuity of the Inka stonemasons who constructed the empire’s majestic buildings out of precisely cut and fitted stone is renowned even today. They are famous for their mortarless and earthquake-proof technique of fitting finely chiseled, jointed stone blocks into one another – so closely, in fact, that a razor blade could not be slide between them – and this highly detailed work was accomplished mainly with hammerstones. Many Inka monuments (including the empire’s capital, Machu Picchu) still stand testament to the quality of the workmanship of Inka engineers, but how, why, and where they built these give important insight into the significance that building technology held for the Inkas.…

One of the the amazing things is that the stoneworks at Machu Picchu is in the finest quality. In the article The Stones of Machu Picchu, Duane Damon states, "...walls of white granite ashlars [stone building blocks] carefully cut and exquisilely bitted together" (Damon). What Duane Damon is saying, is that the walls are made and cut to precision so that the pieces can fit together perfectly. Also, that with all the hard work put into these stoneworks that everything fits together like a puzzle piece. Also in the article…

Having grown up in Western North Carolina and Eastern Tennessee, I have a love for nature and the mountains. With this love, comes a fascination for and desire to learn more about the areas that I adore the most. The Great Smoky Mountains Nation Park is one of those places. The park is a chain of preserved land that stretches from Gatlinburg, Tennessee to Cherokee, North Carolina, along Highway 441. In the midst of reading Dorie: Woman of the Mountains by Florence C. Bush, I was interested to learn that Dorie grew up in what is known today as The Great Smoky Mountains National Park. To dig deeper into the topic, I found a photograph of a town called Elkmont and records from the park’s commission during the early 1900’s. An analysis of the Photograph of Elkmont and records from the Tennessee Great Smoky National Park Commission of 1931 reveals a town’s time when lumber companies were king and the time before and during the establishment of a national park.…

Situated north of Grand Canyon National Park, the Glen Canyon Dam serves a multitude of purposes: it controls the distribution of sediment and water, generates $50 to $100 million worth of hydroelectricity, maintains a cold-water trout fishery, and allows for recreational activities in Lake Powell (NRC 1). However, it has also incurred damages to the surrounding environment, which holds cultural significance for the indigenous tribes. In 1988, former Secretary of the Interior Manuel Lujan initiated the Glen Canyon Dam Environmental Impact Studies (EIS) to examine the downstream impact of dam operations. The USBR was first to join the EIS, followed by the National Park Service and state agencies (Austin and Drye 288). However, tribal involvement…

I recently backpacked 32 miles through the Grand Canyon National Park over spring break. My trip leader told me, “Sorry I made you guys pack so many warm jackets and clothes, its usually not in the 90’s during this time of year”. Just like that I thought to myself, I could have had a lighter pack but I also thought about how global warming is real and its everywhere, even in the vastest lands. Like astronomer Lucianne Walkowicz said and I mentioned in my previous paper, “the more you look for planets like Earth, the more you appreciate our own planet” I came to a realization just buy exploring the Grand Canyon how important the rule of leaving no trace behind really is. The Grand Canyon National Park, as well as other parks really enforce this…

The Grand Canyon is one of the most visited tourist attractions in the United States. Millions of people each year flock to visit these mysterious natural attractions. General scientific consensus was that these canyons were formed 5-10 million years ago by the Colorado river. This theory was widely accepted in the scientific community, because there is evidence that supports it and it seemed like the most reasonable explanation, until now.…

The Grand Canyon was once a part of a continental collision about 1.7 billion years ago when volcanic islands collided in the south west of America, where the North American plate is now. Mountain building occurred about 75 million years ago when the uplift of almost 2 miles in the region, (called a Laramide orogeny event) started and created the Colorado Plateau.…
