Grand Nursing Theory
A research study can be started from formulating a question or when there is an area of concern. This occurs when there is a gap in the information that demands a solution to help improve nursing practice (Schmidt & Brown, 2015). A nurse can identify a research problem through professional literature, clinical experience, previous research, current nursing theories, and national initiatives (Schmidt & Brown, 2015).
Professional literature can help to identify a research problem. Reading journals, using internet search engines such as; Google and PubMed as well as having a discussion regarding information learned from a professional journal can lead to clinical research (Schmidt & Brown, 2015).

These grand theories related four key elements in order to organize knowledge and explain the nature and goals of nursing (Schmidt & Brown, 2015). The four key elements are: the person or recipient of care, the environment, health and nursing (Schmidt & Brown, 2015). Constructing a study to test a nursing theory is challenging and most grand nursing theories have had few studies completed that supported theoretical concepts (Schmidt & Brown, 2015).
