Every family has someone that they are especially proud of and likes to talk about. Most families have a rich and luscious history that is easy to map and find. Some families, however it is not that simple. They don’t have the luxury of going onto known web sites or libraries to find their history. Much like my family, these families when having to make reports or essays over a relative have a select few to choose from. Grandparents are the easiest because they are known and some are still alive. The grandfather I chose to write about is Nole C. Strickbine or Spike Strickbine as he preferred to be called. I chose to write about him because of his tough early childhood,…

Picking someone for this paper was much more difficult than the first one, at immediate thought the only people I knew over the age of 65 were my family members. I started to look into some of my friends’ parents but they were not quite there. Then it hit me, the perfect person to interview would be my friend that passed away in Dickinson, her grandmother. She is one of the most loving, caring, supportive grandparents I have ever met. I have always seen her from that stand point so interviewing her would only help me to understand how she became the way she is today.…

I am thankful for my grandparents because they took me in when no one else could. They jumped in the moment I needed and were there for me then and still are now. They put up a wall upstairs and I officially moved in I have been living with them for four and half to five years now. My grandma and I also bake and make food together. My grandmother was the one who made me interested in cooking and baking. Every night she would make herself a salad or something she liked, she would make something else for my grandfather, and them for me. She did this almost every night of every week and never ate until we had our food. They’re loving because they always put me first and make sure that I am doing good in school and that I am happy. If we ever go on a trip they will go somewhere for me even if they don’t want to because they want to make my experience the best that they possibly can. My grandparents are simply two of the most wonderful people I have ever met.…

He like everyone of my grandparents is very kind but he’s been getting sick a little bit lately though which is very unfortunate. My grandma Lorraine who is married to Delmar is like I said very kind. Lorraine was very hard working she doesn’t work much anymore because she is a little old. My mom and grandma also helped me get into reading and writing. My mom taught me how to read and my grandma to write. I’m glad that they helped me excel in school, without them i don’t know where i would be right now. I probably wouldn’t be at Upstate. I’d probably be at McDonald’s flippin’ burgers or fries.…

My grandfather’s desire to succeed in whatever he does is truly apparent in his stories of his past. I was 11 years old when I heard his first story of hardship and success. His story entailed him and his 9 siblings; they were underprivileged and lacked parenting. My grandfather was 16 and the oldest of the bunch, he decided the take on the role of the father. He made the conscious decision to drop out of school and begin working for Kraft. Working 60 hour weeks selling dairy products door to door he managed to feed and clothe his family. This tremendous and courageous task has given me the encouragement to help my family and value what we have and what they have given me.…
