Grandparents: Family and Grandma
I flipped the page of the photo album. There I was, grinning happily at my grandma. In another picture, my grandpa was feeding me. Why couldn't I remember? When I was just a few months old, I was sent to live with my grandparents. They raised me for about two years, and then I went back to America to my parents. In my opinion, infancy is the most difficult stage in the process of raising a child. Loud shrieks, diaper changing and wailing in the middle of the night- it doesn't sound very appealing does it? My grandparents dealt with all of it, and I can’t thank them because I can’t remember any of it. I was six when I returned for the first time since leaving China. Tired from the long flight and a intimidated by the huge, noisy airport, I gripped my dad’s sleeve tightly. When we reached the exit, I saw 6 unfamiliar faces beaming at me. “Lisa!” they exclaimed. “We missed you so much!” I shifted my weight uncomfortably, peering at my mom for reassurance. Who are these people, I wondered? “Go on,” my mom said. “Say hello.” First, I was introduced to my older aunt. I noticed that she didn’t have hair, and I would later learn that she had leukemia. She’s basically recovered now, except for occasional check ups at the hospital. My younger cousin was quiet. She looked at me with large, curious brown eyes. I was just as much a stranger to her as she was to me. She gave me a timid wave. My older cousin told me about all the fun things to do in Beijing, and told me that she had a video game for me when I got home. My ears perked up instantly. What was this talk of video games? I loved them. I decided that I liked her. My other aunt is the gossip of the family. Don’t get me wrong, I love her dearly, but she can talk up quite a storm. She always has new topics to talk about, and a million questions. Lastly, I (re)met my grandparents. My grandma is a fiery character, with a huge temper and loud personality. She loves watching dramas, and becomes extremely animated when

I don’t remember much of my childhood. It’s been said that when you experience trauma, your brain has a defense mechanism to help you forget it ever happened. This is both helpful and hurtful in terms of carrying on. I don’t remember much of my mother before her alcoholism began to control her. I wish I could remember what she was like; I’ve been told she was a wonderful mother, though it’s very hard for me to believe that now.…

As people continue to age, they will eventually become “elderly” and enter into the later adulthood stage of life. Elderly people have more time to reflect upon their lives and that’s perhaps why they enter into Erickson’s socioemotional ego integrity versus despair stage. Basically, what defines this stage is that old people will either be within ego integrity and have a positive or accepting nature of their life, including mistakes or they will despair and have a negative outlook on their life full of regrets and should haves that can’t be changed (Arnett, 2012). What this means is that most elderly people will be socioemotionally content or fuel potential anguish which can influence their outlook of life as a whole. Arnett goes on to say that “The physical and cognitive problems that become more common in the course of late adulthood…

On my first reading of this story, I initially felt the fear frequently seen in grandmothers in confronting danger and how they try to convince us to stay away from it: "The Misfit is a loose from the Federal Pen and headed toward Florida and you read here what it says he did to this people….", the grandmother said. As I have experienced in the past, once a Mom and Dad have made a decision to do something, it's difficult to change plans, and least from an elderly mother wish. The story continues on a kind of humorous way as the family travel through the country and the grandmother talks of how were the old days and how different are these time. "People are certainly not like they used to be" the grandmother told Red Sam while in the lounge.…
